It is a device that sits between networks and provides filtering of
packets. Originally called firewalls because of the similarities between
them and the architectural firewall - in that it compartmentalizes the
networks so that they can be isolated from one another if needed..

BTW, it has very little to do with what these guys are arguing about.

Features added to firewall devices were useful and it was decided
somewhere that moving these features from the firewall to the desktop
didn't require changing the name from "firewall" to something more
appropriate (like anything other than "firewall"). Hence the confusion.

These features *appear* to have the same purpose as they did on the
device, but people should rethink what is attainable when the filtering
can be affected by subverting the environment the features are running
in.

A firewall protects networked computers from intentional hostile
intrusion that could
compromise confidentiality or result in data corruption or denial of
service.
It may be a hardware device or a software program running on a secure
host computer.
In either case, it must have at least two network interfaces, one for
the network it is
intended to protect, and one for the network it is exposed to.

A firewall sits at the junction point or gateway between the two
networks, usually a private network and a public network such as the
Internet. The earliest firewalls were simply routers. The term firewall
comes from the fact that by segmenting a network into different physical
subnetworks, they limited the damage that could spread from one subnet
to another just like firedoors or firewalls.

Something like ZA, Norton, XP, Vista and other software solutions called
firewalls are not firewalls. At best, they are host based packet filters.

If you are going to use someone else's definition, buckwheat, then
post a link so one can see relevant attributes. Otherwise people might
get the impression you're not an idiot.

If it is your intention to mislead readers in this regard then
remember to remove the linefeeds from whereever you nicked the
definition from.
