they didn't even have anti-virus software installed which should clue
you into what I was talking about.

So now you are, um, "editing" the article that you cited which never
made that claim?

Just read the story as it was actually told and stop making up your own
so-called "facts" about the story.

1. You have to be dumb to let a keylogger get installed.
If someone has physical access to your computer, forget about security.

2. You'd have to be stupid ... virus from 2007 ... for more than a year.
Did the article say when the laptop actually got infected?

3. Hints of this keylogger would have been obvious ...
If behavior was obvious, they wouldn't be hints.  If keylogger infection
were obvious, why would you need any software to scan for it?

4. NASA allowed personal laptops to be brought in.
More creative editing by you.  The article never said that.  They
haven't divulged any details yet as to what they believe was the
infection vector into the laptops.  And just where did you think you saw
mention that these were "personal" laptops that got brought in rather
than assigned to NASA staff?

5. NASA allows unchecked laptops onto the IIS?
IIS is a web server, not a corporate network.  Just more phlegm you
decided to the article to make up your own story.

6. Instead of using in-house laptops, NASA allows employees to take
their laptops home?
Again, you don't know, the article didn't say that, and you're just
adding your own spin on the story.

7. NASA actually owns laptops?
And you had a point with that question?  Gee, corporations actually have
laptops?  Duh!

8. NASA allows the laptops for use off-site.
Ya think?  What would be the point of purchasing a much higher-priced
portable computer if you didn't actually want it to be portable?

9. NASA doesn't [do viral scans]?
And where did you read THAT from the article you cited, or any other
article?

10. Based on the security practices at NASA ... smuggle data to/from
NASA.
Yeah, more spin based on information that you don't provide and won't
provide.

No one really cares about your made-up story.

You can bet that the NASA tech experts will be thoroughly scanning all
laptops taken on space missions from now on.  :)
PS: Then again, maybe they got it (them) while they were in orbit.
So, the laptops going into space will probably be loaded with
anti-everything. Ha Ha Ha

No one cares except you and more than 8 other replies right?

According to you this is how the story read.
"unknown virus found in unknown computer of unknown nasa employee and
unknown details are known"

BUT of course we shouldn't EVER be critical of NASA's operations. We
should just trust NASA all the time and let them have free will. NASA
is Jesus Christ and we should never question NASA.

Do I have it right yet?
