I didn't embarrass myself before. I found the use of variables holding
bytes as strings to accomplish the same thing that ABS did as "Pretty
Good' only not as efficient. Did you miss that part?

Dustin you used 1634 words to say you lost the technical challenge you set
Pooh Cat.

Most of those words were to hide your embarassment.

Sorry you couldn't make it as an IT pro..... don't give up the day job
while you're learning from Pooh Cat.

That's true and it's not the correct way to find the size of a Windows
PE format exe, as I thought I'd made clear.

In the sense that I've not been employed as such. However, I am a
professional programmer (now retired) and have been working as one
with many types of computer from mainframes to PCs for more years than
I care to remember. I know a fair bit about the format of PE files.

No, they are not the facts. How do you know what or how many malware
samples I've seen or analysed? I've no idea myself but have looked at
many, many samples and some, being malware, are built very oddly
indeed. Some PE exes have zeros in the header and others have differnt
invalid values which might fool your program. All the Windows loader
cares about is that it can find the PE header and thus the rest of the
exe by inspecting the e_lfanew field. Nothing else in the MZ header is
relevant to it.

Ant...... did you know Dustin used to be a malware researcher for
Malwarebytes. Sounds similar to how you used to analyze virus samples.

Trouble is if Dustin makes a mistake he doesn't like to admit it and he
makes long posts deflecting attention from his mistakes. I expect he may
post some weird justification to you. Just saying!

Tell me, Dustin ....

What was/is Ant's professional occupation?

He's advised me a few times but I don't recall ever asking for his
'credentials'. I have never doubted anything he's told me though. He is
in my "good guy" folder! :-)

Within these very Usenet groups you have freely admitted, Dustin, that
you carry out illegal acts in conjunction with you HHI colleagues,
vis-à-vis facilitating the illegal access to copyrighted music MP3s by

THAT puts you FIRMLY in the *BAD* category!

You should stop doing it. *NOW*!

As far as malware researcher, unless he either ran his own company, developed
his own product or worked for another company specializing in antimalware,
then he was, a hobbyist in so far as that is concerned.

You've "won" nothing. I haven't done anything to benefit you. :)

Dustin not long ago you were telling Pooh Cat how a gifted IT amateur
could be as good as a formally trained IT pro. Now you have changed your
mind.

Maybe you choose what to believe depending on whether it helps you win

I just spanked your IT pro with superior demo source, again. this compiles
to 48 bytes less than his best. [g]

DIM A(5)
print"Dusty Buster. Version 3"
print"Written by Pooh the cat April 25th, 2014"
print""
print"Enter filename: ";
input filename$;
open"i",1,filename$
FOR partialblock = 0 to 5
INPUT#1,filename$ BYTE
a(partialblock)=ASC(filename$)
NEXT partialblock
close 1

partialblock=256*A(3)
partialblock=partialblock+A(2)

blocks&=256*A(5)
blocks&=blocks&+A(4)

totalsize&=blocks&*512
partialblock=512-partialblock
totalsize&=totalsize&-partialblock

print" "
print"Totalsize ";
print totalsize&;
print" bytes"

end

He wanted to move the goalposts and decide it was about filesize. Well,
this demo is exactly 2000 bytes when compiled. 1984 bytes when compiled if
you don't elect to close the file handle. [g] I told him for days he could
recycle strings. I waited, I waited.. he never did it, so I've done it for
him. The results? smaller file. [g] And it's down to running in 6K, instead
of 8k as poohs original, and 7k as his revised editions require.
*hahahahaha* Some IT pro you've got.

I may see if I can squeeze a little more out of it later... [g]

clarifying *for Dustin's benefit*!

My wife's brother-in-law has worked for IMB, here in the UK, for over
thirty years. Did you work as a programmer for a similarly large
organisation, Ant?

Oh. A rhetorical question, then.

I've worked for small, medium and large orgs. The smallest being a
handful of people and the largest being the UK govt. My most
enjoyable time was working for an oil exploration company in the
1970s. All Fortran and assembler in those days.

Thanks for clarifying, Ant. I personally have no experience with
programming or coding but my late son had been a guru with ICL/Fujitsu.
He always helped me out when I didn't understand matters which piqued my
interest.

How are you enjoying *your* retirement years?
