Oh my! Avast is STILL adding headers to my outgoing USENET posts.
I think I'll just turn Avast off altogether and find another antivirus
program. Now that Avast is off, let's see if the headers are clean in this
message!

Right-click the Avast icon in systray.  Select "On-Access Protection
Control" > Details > Internet Mail > Customize > NNTP tab.  UNcheck "Scan
outbound news".  OK your way out.

Hi there Ernie,

I do very much appreciate your help.

Unfortunately, this may be a bug in Avast that Avast doesn't respect it's
own don't-insert-nntp-header settings - or - it may be that I'm doing
something terribly wrong.

To ascertain if I'm doing something terribly wrong, please see a screenshot
of my avast settings posted here just now:

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/3817/avastza7.jpg

You can see I DID exactly what you suggested (and I tested those avast
settings in my reply to Ben Shimmin, and I even restarted Avast and
rebooted Windows XP, and double-checked the settings before sending this
nntp message ....... and STILL, that reply to Ben Shimmin had errant Avast
headers in the OUTGOING NNTP message. I suspect this message too will have
the avast headers even though I did everything everyone told me to do.

Of course I checked the google record but did not find anyone who has this
persistent Avast nntp header problem.

I'm wondering if this is a new bug in avast or if my settings are somehow
wrong?

Well, shoot!  I doubt that it's a bug in Avast since my NNTP setup is the same
as yours and I have the latest v4.7 update.  Have you checked the SMTP setting
and UNchecked the outbound mail scanning?

I can't tell from your header what your news client might be, I would guess
40tude Dialog but it doesn't have an "X-Newsreader:" line that I can see.  It
might pay to look at your news reader options.

I've had good luck with <http://forum.avast.com/ also when I'm stuck.

Yep, it does:
"X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 000736-2, 04/26/2007), Outbound message"
"X-Antivirus-Status: Not-Tested"
Grrrr.

Oh my. I forgot to mention that I am 40Tude Dialog as my news reader and
the reason you don't see an X-Newsreader line is because I'm using the
script http://www.40tude.com/dialog/wiki/index.php/RemoveHeaders to
eliminate the User-Agent: nntp header before Avast sees the outgoing
message.

But Avast should accept when I tell it not to add these two lines to
outgoing nntp messages!
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 000736-0, 04/25/2007), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Do you think Avast is confused by the fact there is no User-Agent: header
line coming out of 40Tude Dialog?

Why would you want to do that?  There's no reason to hide the fact that
you are using a fine newsreader.

I have no idea at all on that.  Remove or disable your script and see if that
solves the problem.

While you're sorting that out, you may not have noticed that your
From line is wrong. You have quotation marks where there should be
angle brackets. I think you've probably put teh information into teh
boxes the wrong way round.
