Ima, try posting your problem at VirtualDr.com as they are an excellent
group. It is free, but you do have to register to use it, but not to browse
it. I have been a member for many years and they are one of the best for
getting help.
As far as your product key goes, it is on your HDD.

You can google on how to find it. Here is one link.

You can also dl Win2000Pro off the internet, but you will still need your
own product key.

Perhaps you should put your HDD in another computer as a Slave and copy down
anything that you cannot afford to lose. You can even run scans and recovery
programs on it that way.
I'm surprised no one has come up with a good solution in this NG.
Try VirtualDr.

It is a "recovery" partition (hidden) which is accessible by software
the manufacturer loaded on the computer. Many times when there is no
cd-rom "recovery" disk included with a purchase, it is because they
already included it in hardware storage.

Contact the manufacturer to see how to access it (if they indeed
included it).

If it is there it'll restore to factory settings and lose all of IG's
data.  Doesn't W2k have a repair install option?  Couldn't IG acquire
a legal copy of W2k from ebay or somewhere, and do a repair install?

Good chance of losing all that data when installing Linux too. It is the
cost of not doing backups.
Contacting the manufacturer is probably the best option - just in case
they also offer some recovery options instead of just restore options.

Yes, but I suspect there is *much* more wrong with  this installation
than a repair will address.

It's beginning to appear that an os re-install is eminent. Where I used
to be able to Wine certain products that I had installed, I now get
'file not found'. When I search the w2k hd, the exe files no longer
  exist. Examples : sPatch.exe, Sol.exe, Agent.exe, Irfan.exe, etc..
Simple applications - no executables. I must assume that OS files
  are also missing.

  Rrrrrrrrrrrrr ..!

  Many thanks to all respondents,

So it sounds like a virus 'changed'  all your ' .exe '  extensions or the
eset anti-virus removed them.
Someone here might be able to help. Perhaps they were just renamed or held
in a quarantine by the eset product.
Have you tried   virtualdr.com ? They are free (you have to register) and
very good.
Make sure you copy all you need before wiping that drive, if it becomes
necessary.

I believe it was that  eset anti-virus removed them. There were 2 check
boxes. One had to do with applications ( I thought it would list them )
and the other had to do with removal, of which I checked both. Before
exiting/rebooting it listed a lot of virus it detected and deleted.
