Clamav was designed as a simple signature scanner for use by ISPs on
email servers and the like. It had far less signatures than the major
players in antivirus. It also suffered from a inability to handle
certain kinds of malware such as polymorphic viruses and macro
viruses. It was a mistake to port such a inadequate scanner to
Windows.

Now, I put my criticisms in the past tense since I've not evaluated
clamav in quite some time. No doubt it's been improved. But frankly
I'm at a loss as to why anyone would bother with it. There are many
good and much better products to choose from.

If you're looking for a good on-demand scanner that's free, check
out Bit Defender. And check out my KAVDOSNT kit for KAVDOS32.
It offers the top notch detection capabilities of Kaspersky.

Art, I found out that Checkpoint uses ClamAV as their Anti-Virus
offering for their Safe@Office Firewalls. A year's subscription for
their AV service amounts to ~ $ 100 US. That's a tad bit high for a
product offering such basic protection. Needless to say, I took a pass
on that offer.
