I'm completely confused as to why you would bring Davids name into this,
as he and multi-av have nothing to do with the issues you describe above.

The PC was severely compromised, the OS was trashed such that it could not
be cleaned without removing the malware, which you found also caused it to
not operate properly - that's normal for malware that replaces OS system
files.

None of the Malware removal tools FIX the OS, they just remove the
infectors if they can find them - if an infector replaces a necessary file
and you attempt to clean it, well you remove the file which may be
necessary for proper operation of the OS.

So, it would appear that neither David or Multi-AV had anything to do with
your problem, that you didn't know enough to just wipe and reinstall to
start with.

Re: PcButts caught in another lie on his blog

Thank you for your reply Leythos - I realize all that you pointed out.  I've
worked with computers for nearly 2 decades, and I more than know malware
removal tools do not fix problems with the OS, but its good to point this
out for the uninformed who lurk here - LOL.

My post was in reply to a comment no.pencil.necks made above about that
particular programs damage potential.  And I would agree with you, neither
him or his program had anything to do with the problems the computer already
had.  My only objective in using these tools were get the PC into a state
were I could salvage anything my neighbors PC contained in the way of
important data... prior to doing a re-installation of XP.

The quickest method is to place the severely compromised drive in a
computer that works, boot up (not on the compromised drive) and copy the
data to a backup source.

I guess I didn't understand the point of complaining about cleaning the
machine leaving it messed up, when you already know that it can/will often
do that, and then knowing that you're going to reinstall. A
repair/reinstall is not the same as wipe/install and could leave you with
an infector still on the machine.

Re: PcButts caught in another lie on his blog

Yeah... the point in doing a repair install (if I could have,) was only to
do recovery operation of data on her PC, because I didn't have any room in
mine in order to slave hers in.

We worked out a plan to use her CD_RW Rom drive to back the stuff up, but
when we uncovered that Windows didn't see the drive anylonger (Thats how
fek'ed up it was.)... we threw in the towel, wiped and started from scratch.

Slave hers in? Heh...
Dude, next time you decide to reload clean, don't reformat; it's not
necessary. Boot the machine from a bart disc,
rename the following folders

Documents and Settings to Documents And Settings.old
Program Files to Program Files.old
windows. to windows.old

then reboot the machine from your windows disc, select leave file
system alone no changes and load a virgin copy of windows.

This way, you don't hose the users data... :) And your not halfassing
it by wanting to slave it to yours. LoL

2 decades you said? LoL.... Do tell.

I disagree Dustin - you can only clean a pc of things that you/apps can
find, and you may not be able to find it all, you just never know.

The only 100% certain way to clean a machine is, as I've stated several
times, is to wipe it in a clean environment, reinstall in a clean
environment, with clean media.

I think you misunderstood what I meant by clean. If you follow those
instructions and reload a virgin copy of windows, it will indeed be a
clean installation, until you access the data/software from the
previous installation.

Quoted text here. Click to load it

If you wish to preserve the data; wiping the hard drive isn't
necessary. If you have the luxury of a clean environment, you probably
have production restore cds...and the machines aren't that personlized
anyway. In the real world, the machines are personalized, and I'm not
about to hose somebodies mp3 collection due to a virus.

You can load the operating system completely clean on a hard drive
with pre existing data.

Sort of, the only time you repair it is to get at the data long enough to
backup the data files, then wipe it after.

When it comes to a cleaning, I always wipe and reinstall, but I've been
known to clean one enough to make a backup of their data.

This is where you should have been civil. Now I'm going to flame you a
bit. :)

You've been working with computers for nearly 2 decades, and yet, 10
files could not be removed from a system you worked with either in
normal and/or safe mode. Did you ever try pendingfiledelete key and/or
a bart pe disc?
You decided to reformat and reload a system which was a software
failure issue, not hardware. That's incompetence where I work.

Now id like to ask in what ways have you worked with computers? It
sounds to me based on your post to leythos, that your an above average
end user, but that's all. Am I wrong?

Yet you couldn't disable 10 files in safe mode? :) I wouldn't let you

LOL @ flame. Sticks and Stones.. and all that... LOL.

After 2 decades, I'm an above avg PC user, who is still managing to learn
new ways to deal with old problems.

Thats right... I said 10 files couldn't be removed. I didn't have a Bart PE
CD handy to use - or most likely I'd of tried that approach.  I'm glad you
wouldn't let me format a floppy Dustin, and have a nice day :)

I told you, you should have been civil. I would have let you slide on
your ignorance, but no, you wanted to involve me in a silly name
calling game, so I took a shot at your 2 decades experience..and one
final crack, 2 decades and you didn't know how to remove 10 files....
does clearly, make you incompetent. That's not a flame, btw, that's
the truth.

You have a great day as well :)

Re: PcButts caught in another lie on his blog

Whoa.... Whoa.. back up a second. I think you're reading way to much into
our little exchange here.

1. In another post, you stated to someone else, that I assumed you to be a
troll and thought your dustbin nickname meant you could be kicked around (my
take on the post.)  Not at all. In fact, I've used your bughunter product
and was/ are still very impressed with its progress.

2. I have a program that can set files up for pending delete on reboot, its
just a damn shame the CD rom drive wasn't working so I could install and use
it. Mind you, I had no spare parts to work with either (try a different
drive) basically, I and my neighbor were fucked.

You have a program to do it? You can set the key yourself, you nor
your neighbor was fucked.
regedit still works in safe mode... :)

Anyways, I was a bit out of line by starting this technical thread...
I know what your skillset is, and it's not fair of me to talk over
your head.

I did this only to prove a small point... flaming doesn't mean
anything. I'm not often flamed for the technical knowledge, i'm flamed
for the way I present it and my general attitude...

The issue about PCbutts1 is what brought me to posting on this thread.
Although, I have done some reading up on you as well - I'm not here to
hammer you about your past or Bughunter at all.  If it wasn't for EGO and
all this petty infighting that seems to be going on here - just knowing 1/2

it -would leave me and many others who come here on Usenet pretty
knowlegable on the subject.

multi-av doesn't break anything. If you have infected system files and
they are renamed or removed, the OS may fail. This isn't the scanners
fault. That's how the malware game is. Bad files have to be replaced.

Hi Rhonda

I never denied that, but you certainly wouldn't accept the fact that I
didn't make the post you accused me of.

Quoted text here. Click to load it

You sent it to me, yes. I found it amusing, and shared some of the
emails with some individuals who were at my house at the time. The
fact one of them decided to make use of the information in a less than
positive manner is shameful, but again, wasn't actually caused by me,
not directly.

I credit them with far more than yourself. C.J is a prime example. He
assumed I'm a troll and that the dustbin nick name would be amusing.
Well, I am amused.. at the fact he says he's been working with
computers for 2 decades, but couldn't save a system... NOW THAT IS
entertainment!

Heh. How can you and I resolve our differences then Rhonda? You
followup to my posts as often as you can, you even start threads about
me. One might consider you to be stalking.. :) In all seriousness,
what will it take for you and I to part ways without continuing to
flame each other?

Hmm. You make no sense. How can someone with no character willingly
write release and support a completely free program? I've spent 2
years and counting, of my time, when I could be doing things to
satisfy me... like you suggest I do, but instead, that time has been
spent writing code and analyzing code... 2 years Rhonda.
