Does anyone have any comments about PC Tools Spyware Doctor and/or
Registry Mechanic? I downloaded the free version of AVG 8.0. It's not
finding Antivirus 2008.

Re: PC Tools

I have used PC Tools freeware for about four years now and found iy
consistently reliable. It is frequently recommended in UK Computer mags.

The only problem I've found is that RM is a very unaggressive registry
cleaner, leaving a lot of stuff in place that I would prefer to remove.
OTOH, this makes RM safer than more aggressive cleaners. If you run it
in Windows Safe mode, it cleans out more stuff.

A much better alternative is:
SuperAntispyware - Free

A much better alternative is:
Avira AntiVir® Personal - FREE Antivirus

(The free version won't scan your emails.)

No surprise here.
Download/execute:
Malwarebytes© Corporation - Anti-Malware

--and/or--
Go to:

A squared will get it, I have been cleaning that infection out of at least
two PC's a day, (some variants are harder than others to remove)
go to emisoft
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download /

Download and run the unpacker  (a-squard Emergency USB Stick) files then
browse to the a2usb directory and run a2free.exe and let it update, then
scan and choose deep scan.
depending on what variant of antivirus 2008 you have it may have also borked
your taskmanager and or display properties also.
let us know how you did and good luck.

Clark - Thanks for the reply. I don't use Google, but I do use Clusty.
I did get info on the PC Tools, but it seemed to be mostly from people
who sold the programs. I think that the really useful information
comes from people like you - that's why I posted here.

Very few products can deal with antivirus2008, including some of the real
big hitters like nod32.

But the newcomer MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) can.

Yes, I also started recommending MBAM in Dutch newsgroups.

After several reported successes, more people are now also advising MBAM
(usually in combination with SuperAntiSpyware).
