I've used ZA at several locations where a family kept getting their
system hacked while using the Windows firewall - once I made them all
"local users" and setup the ZAP rules, they were uncompromised for more
than a year.

A personal firewall application running on a User PC is only as good as
the "User" controlling the PC/Firewall.

But the simple fact is that a Router will protect you better than
Windows firewall and ZAP against INBOUND connections that are
unsolicited.

If that 'fact' is so simple, I should expect to see an indication of its
simplicity some day, wonder how much longer I'll have to wait?
BTW: No ZA/ZAP or anybody else's FW beyond the basic XP and unless I
click myself into trouble, I don't ever experience any.

If you don't believe a NAT appliance provides protection than just say
so and be done with the thread.

Yes, sort of...

It does more than just inspect and filter though.

A compromised computer cannot be trusted - the software it runs cannot
be trusted. The *other* box does not depend on that compromised
environment to do its thing.

Malware can completely defeat the firewall software running in that
compromised environment, and yet the *other box* isn't affected at all.

...unless it also becomes compromised (which has happened - due to
people leaving the default settings like username = admin, password =
admin)

Sounds like your whole premise is dependent on having a compromised
system, sorta like sooge's mp3 infector that depended on someone using
his player in the first place. With an un-compromised system I see no
difference between an onboard application and some additional outboard
device other than the increased risk of connector failure from all the
additional wiring.

Yeah, it sorta does. The effectiveness of a firewall's outbound
filtering isn't really tested unless the hostility exists. It could be
100% effective while nothing is testing its mettle. Its inbound
filtering would depend on its configuration - and if it is configurable
by a compromised computer, it is then that it is tested.

Indeed, and it is nice to have firewall features on the computer for
those occasions where you are not behind a real firewall.

None. That's why I don't have any trouble with my old and tightly-
configured Win2k on a dial-up modem with no firewall of any kind and
no anti-anything installed. There's also some advantage in running a
non-mainstream OS because a lot of malware today won't work on
Windows versions below XP.

Totally agree,
and after neutering the native IE in exchange for Opera 9.63,
my platform is quite immune to any vagrant attacks.

And if you don't monitor those "Exceptions" on a routine basis you could
easily find yourself with ones you didn't know where added.
