OptimizerPro - What is this?

Threaded View
Today, OptimizerPro installed itself on my computer.  My Antivirus program
(Norton Antivirus) warned me of it and I had NAV Quarantine it.  I then used
Control Panel to Uninstall it.  I am running Win7 64bit.

Anyone know what this program and why it was self-installed on my computer?

Any insights are appreciated.

A quick google (free for everyone) shows that it looks like another one of
those scam "mycleanpc.com" utilities that you have to buy in order to have
it do anything. Its web site domain is owned by a company with an address
in India.

What did you install, or click on, that had it bundled?

I haven't installed anything in the last few weeks, so, am not sure where it
came from?

You don't have to install anything to get scamware. It's possible to
include a hidden link to the download site in an e-mail or website. You
need anti-malware that will check any new file before it opens. Not 100%
protection, but better than nothing.

Thanks, Wolf.

After uninstalling it, I ran a full Malwarebytes scan and it located a lot of
items.  I had it remove them.  Later on, I ran Malwarebytes again and it did not
find anything.

So, cross my fingers for now :)

Curious, are you using the paid version of MBAM and running it in real time
mode?
Probably not, but some maintain that MBAM in real time misses a lot that a
scan will find. That's why I am asking.
Thanks,

Hi Buffalo,

I have the current "Paid" version of MBAM, but do not run it in real time.  I
use it to do manual scans when I feel like it (about once a week).  I have NAV
that I run in real time.

1.If you use MBAM only for an occasional scan, you don't need the paid
version.

2. so your NAV did not stop and remove the intruder, you had to use MBAM
to do so.

3. As you have a paid version, you are well advised to use MBAM
real-time as an addition to Norton.

4. You should consider replacing Norton by a better AV product.

To be sure nothing is left, I recommend you download, install, update(!)
and do a full scan with SuperAntiSpyware Free 5.7.1026

NAV did halt the installation and advised me to not continue and uninstall
anything there using Control Panel, which I did.  I did ran MBAM to clean out
anything left.

I've always seen comments that it is not advisable to run  more then one
AV product at a time.

NAV did not prevent installation of the intruder, MBAM might have.

MBAM is not an AV product, it is anti-malware additional to anti-virus.
See the website:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/
"Detects and eliminates malware your antivirus will miss."

I have MBAM running real-time beside my AV and some other security
products.

Did you double check with SAS?
For anti-malware there is not one product that covers everything.
You should use at least two anti-malware programs to scan in succession.

When anything is being installed, NAV tells if it is safe or not!

Some people are still living in the past when Norton was a resource hog
and basically a POS antivirus program. They continue to bash the product
because of it's history...not their actual use.

Well, it sure did a good job on Optimizer Pro, didn't it. Norton is still
highly rated today, overall.
Charlie, you can run MBAM Pro in real time with Norton with no slow downs,
etc.
Try it!

So you are only talking about NAV and ignore all other points?
And you used Mbam to remove the intruder and not NAV?
Why? Did you not trust NAV?

Have a nice day.

So why do you use an antivirus program? You don't trust MBAM?

Please learn to read.
I answered a question of OP.
Mbam is NOT an AV program.

Did I ask you if you answered a question of the OP?

Norton isn't an anti-malware program. The OP already said he used MBAM
to remove Op Pro. You are just busting his balls for no reason and you
know it.

"And you used Mbam to remove the intruder and not NAV? Why? Did you not
trust NAV?"

Ron, to get back on topic!

I am giving "Protection" in Mbam v1.75 a try - I just turned it on, and will see
how it works with NAV (current paid version).  I am running them on Win7 64bit.

A question, in Mbam on the Protection Tab, which items on there do you recommend
turning on.  I have some checked, but not all.

Any other recommendations for running it?

Thanks
