Not enough memory, etc.

Over the last month or two, I have had two of my computers which after
running a day or so will start popping up error messages like "Insufficient
system resources", "There is not enought memory to run this program", "not
enough resources" and other similar messages. The graphics start to
deteriorate and if I don't get shut down fast, I wind up having to do a
power down. I just built a brand new computer and it did it right from the
start!
OK, so obviously it is something software related, or is it?
I have now had two customers bring in computers doing the exsact same thing
and another who has called me with the problem.
Could this be a virus? All my computers and the two customers' computers
have come up clean.
I find it strange that this problem appears to be popping up all over just
in the last month or so.
Now I'm usually not a sucker for such things, but I did "bite" on an
applicationj called "RamSmash" for $11.95 and installed it on my main
computer here and so far it seems to be working. "Frees up wasted memory"
is part of their promotion. Microsoft also has a "FixItNow" routine for
leaking memory which I have installed on my other computer and on the two
customer's computers. There hasn't been enough time yet to determine if it
helped any.
This will most likely be considered off topic in here, but if the problem
is widespread then I'm sure that others in this group have heard of it even
though it might not be virus related.
Then again, it *might* be.

All that information and you didn't post the OS and Service Pack level, the
physical RAM
and the amount assigned to Virtual Memory of each given platform.

This one:
ASUS P5N-D
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 # 2.40GHz
8 GB ram
Nvidia GeForce GTS 350
Dual boot XP Professional SP3, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Pagefile is 5126 (system managed)

The new one:
Motherboard - Intel DP55KG
CPU - Intel Core i7 K 875 @ 2.93Ghz
Memory - 8 Gb (3.49 Gb in XP)
Video - NVidia  GeForce 210 (512)
Dual-boot  Windows 7 Premium 64 bit, XP Pro SP3
Pagefile is whatever it defaulted to (don't have it hooked up now)

One of the others that he just left with was an HP with XP Home Edition
SP3, 512Mb Ram. Not sure about pagefile.

I should add.... the problem is happening in XP. Not Windows 7.

C'mon Dave. If I knew what "app" was causing it, I'd fix it!
But the XP versions are all 32 bit versions, if that's what you mean.

Install the sysinternals process explorer, start it right after
you start the computer, and keep an eye on it from time to time,
to see which application has the memory leak.

I used this for a while:
http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem
I based this choice on this article:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/09/28/easily-reduce-memory-usage-on-all-running-processes-in-windows /

However for all these memory programs I wonder whether they really help
or only suggest they do something useful (like registry cleaners).
I have now Windows 7 and I gave up on "memory" programs.
(at least CleanMem is free)

I downloaded it. I'm sure I'll find other machines to try it on. I wish
you'd posted this before I bought the other one! According to that web
page, CleanMem is easier on resources and just as effective.
Thanks for the info and link.

I've been "up" with this machine now for 1 day, 17 hours, and 4 minutes.
Nothing is acting funny. It hasn't made it over 24 hours for a long time. I
really think the problem is over.
I would rather cure it than just treat the symptoms though.

This problem turned out to be Avira.
See http://tinyurl.com/26kuynh (trust me)
I have come across a total of 5 machines now that were having the problem.
I uninstalled Avira on all of them and the problem went away.
