As have I (AntiVir free version). I've never used NOD32, but I know that
they are a well established company fighting viruses since the old
days - no "Johnny come lately" in the field.

I have used both Nod 32 and Avira, paid versions, and prefer Avira.

That depends.
Please don't ask these questions, but do your own homework to find out
which antivirus YOU think is best and/or more reliable for you.

Both are highly qualified and you can look at AV-Comparatives,
which property of these "contenders" is more important
to *your* personal liking.
I use both.

But why don't you have a look at the free version of Avira Antivir for
your personal use?
http://www.free-av.com/en/download/download_servers.php
That is sufficient for most personal computers.

I have read very well AV-Comparatives and AV web sites. For the reason
given above I don't succeed to choose what is the best.

Try both for 30 days, maybe you can find the one you like best?

I have NOD32 installed for some years now.
Now NOD32 Antivirus 4.2.64.12 64-bit (ENG)

I have also Avira Antivir Free installed, but I switched off the "Guard"
function of Avira.
I installed some jobs in Avira to have updates every two hours.
(and two jobs to do a full scan twice per week).

I use NOD32 as my "real-time" protection.
I use Avira as my "on-demand" second-opinion antivirus program.

At the moment I see no reason to change my current setup.
(despite the "update error of 5418" of NOD32 of yesterday.)

All you get is opinions, and they often don't relate to what the asker
is seeking.

This question isn't so bad, as the question was about reliability not
just "best" but you can see even so that one persons "reliability" might
be the smoothness of the updating mechanism (out of date by hours is
*not* reliable to some, whereas I'm okay with days), and another's idea
might be how infrequent false positives are. I'm okay with FPs - I (like
FredW) have a second opinion on-demand scanner and this computer isn't
going to affect any business I'm doing if it halts.

Different strokes for different folks.

That is right.
One usually gets answers based on very personal preferences,
while sites as AV-Comparatives, VB100, etc. can do tests,
which no private person can do.

I have seen people preferring AVG because they like the (colors of the)
GUI or because there is a version in their home language (never mind the
correctness of the translation).
Usually AVG scores third (four) of the three (nowadays four) main free
antivirus programs, so I wonder sometimes why that is not more important
in choices people make.

<sarcasm>
Then you may as well say that nobody should ever ask any questions about
anything in Usenet, because that's all they will ever get. You should
instead point them towards objective tests (such as VB100, AV-
Comparatives, GRC, etc) and let them do their own research.

Hmmm... on second thought... then you'll get different opinions on which
of those "objective" tests are reliable and which are snake oil. Oh
well...   I guess people should just not ever ask any questions at all on
Usenet.
</sarcasm>
  ;~D

Of course the OP gets opinions. That's what Usenet is all about. Or at
least it was, before the trolls latched on like leeches.

As far as the OP's question, my opinion is that both Antivir & NOD32 are
excellent programs. Antivir may have a slight advantage in overall
effectiveness and is slightly less expensive but (IMHO) NOD32 seems to
have less of an impact on older, slower machines with less available
resources and has a more polished UI (which is irrelevant to me but does
matter to some people). For what little it is worth, I run NOD32 on most
of my systems and Antivir Premium on the others.

Now...  whether or not my opinion is worth the electrons they are
written on, I'm afraid the OP will have to make up his own mind on that!

If the askers give enough information about what is important to them,
then they may get better answers. To just ask "which is better" is
pointless unless the asker is at least aware of the subjectivity.

To me, support is the most important aspect of an antivirus program. If
their support sucks, then I would consider that to be "unreliable". I
don't care so much about update frequency or update server glitches
(others might).

I recall hearing that somewhere else (re slower machines). Do they also
still support W9x/me? Are they both configurable to scan (or to not
scan) e-mail? To some, this may also be a consideration.

Sounds like good info to me. We still don't know what the OP wants
though. Maybe reliability in virus detection, or general malware
detection, or how well it tolerates competing antispyware or antiadware
applications, what if any antirootkit technology it uses...etc...

To me, the question of support is far less important and even more
subjective than most of the other categories. I've only needed support once
or twice with NOD32 in the last 7 years and never with Avira. I suppose
that in itself might be an important point with some people as a measure of
the reliability of the programs in question. On the other hand, it may mean
little to nothing without taking into consideration the knowledge level of
the people installing/maintaining it, the equipment it is installed on, the
particular support person who handled the call(s), etc. I've worked with a
number of support agencies over the years that were real crap shoots.
Sometimes you'd get a knowledgeable support person who provided outstanding
service. On other calls to the same company you might get someone who was
seemingly incapable of moving beyond the on-screen checklist they were
running.

As far as configurations are concerned, both NOD32 and Avira can
individually configure email, http and file scanning.

I believe the last version of NOD32 to support Win9x was 2.7. The latest
info on that version that I recall seeing was that it was discontinued and
no longer available. Signature updates for that version were going to
continue to be provided through sometime in early 2012. I have no idea if
Avira still supports Win9x or not.

Of course, I'm not overly concerned by it since to the best of my
knowledge, only one of my customers is still running a Win9x machine (with
NOD32 v2.7) and it is on its last legs. For what it's worth, it's the same
lawyers office where I finally got to replace their last Win3.11 system
about 3 years ago.

From my personal experience, if your pc hardware had good
specification Avira premium works nice. and boots up fast...

BUT in an older pc (with  mediocre hardware specification) it will
slow it down.

One old PC that I installed Avira the boot up time went up to 5
minutes!

When I removed  it and replaced it with Nod32 AV the boot time was
just slightly above a minute....

Re: NOD32 and Avira Antivir Premium: the best?

NOD's original appeal for me was that it didn't drain
resources on my old Pentium machine.

And now that I have a fast I7 etc.,  I find I still don't
want to drain any resources when I can avoid it.

I have needed tech support from Eset twice - they have been
very responsive, knowledgeable and quick in their responses.
