Newbie Do I need Panda and Windows Defender?

I start with an apology since I have already asked a similar question.
My laptop runs Windows XP. I have Panda Titanium 2006 which has antispyware.
I also have Windows Defender which (I assume) does the same job. Can I just
switch off Windows Defender? I check my laptop on a weekly basis for spyware
with Adadware.

First thing you need to do is drop Panda. It is a resource hog which, from
my experience, slows the machine down intolerably.

Thanks for the advice. My reason for asking is that my laptop is really
slooow. 2 questions:
- What is a better antivirus and antispyware package (either as 1 or 2
programs). I need something which is reliable but quick.
- Do I also need Windows Defender? (I ask because it is sitting on my laptop
and I don't know much about it).
For some background, my laptop is 2 years old but I use it for simple stuff
like word processing, internet. I am very keen to have it spyware-free,
since I do my internet banking via this laptop.

Do NOT run two virus programs at the same time. I use F-Secure myself. My
personal experience is not to even run any two virus or spyware programs at
the same time. Conflicts can occur.

I use free Ad aware which is not running in real time. I do a scan weekly. I
also use free spybot Search and Destroy.

Be sure to use a firewall like Comodo if you do banking.

Good luck.

Consider Kaspersky Internet Security (combined av and firewall).  Very
low cpu usage, and about the best product out there (NOD32 is its only
real rival).  Not cheap but you get what you pay for.

If computer resource use is an issue consider trying Nod32 for anti-
virus protection.

There are cheaper solutions but no better solutions.

I agree about NOD32. I've heard this many times.
But a visit to their web site indicates it is not for the beginner! So
that's something at least to consider.

When I have read reviews on NOD32, it is described as 'not for the newbie'.
I probably need something simpler.

Try Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007:

It's the best suite, in my opinion.

You know, this really means nothing. All you point to is their own site!
Almost everyone agrees it is a resource hog.

As I say, DUMP panda. Slowed my machine incredibly.
NOD32 is not all the difficult, and is great at what it does. I am no
techie, but navigated NOD32 just fine.
