New NcAfee Security Suite SLOWDOWN Issue

Threaded View
I have a Dell Dimension 8100 running Win XP home edition.
This is a continuation of my earlier posts of Aug. 24th, "McAfee Security
Suite SCREWING UP MY COMPUTER!"

After running IERegFix.bat from McAfee, IE6 crashes stopped and my extremely
slow computer functioning improved, but not sufficiently. Again I spoke to
McAfee tech support (online chat), and they advised that I uninstall all my
McAfee software (Security Center and browser Safe Sites), and download and
reinstall it. I did so, only installing VirusScan, not the firewall and
safe-sites programs. I figure I don't need them as I have the Windows
firewall.

After uninstalling all the McAfee crap, I couldn't believe how fast my
computer was able to boot up and how quickly IE6 and OE6 loaded and ran -
what an amazing difference! Even the older version of VirusScan I had was
slowing it down, but not so badly.

With the McAfee software back, everything is almost as slow as it was before
I uninstalled and reinstalled. Apparently this problem is inherent in the
software. Is this typical among all anti-virus programs? Are there any
available that cost the same or less, are as effective, but free of this
intolerable problem?

Hi Howard,

Do yourself a favor and Pin Services to the Start Menu.=20

    Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Right-click Services =

But for now, Open Services by Single or Double clicking on Services. =
Scroll Down until you see the McAfee Entries. Open the Properties for =
each, one at a time and change the Startup Type. Click Apply then OK. Do =
the same for the rest of them.

Reboot the computer and check operation.

Now, if you have to go back to Services, just click Start and click =
on Services.

Thank you very much!

I had to change 5 of the service settings to agree with your information
below. Upon bootup tomorrow I'll see if it's made any improvement; if not, I
think I'll want another antivirus program that doesn't slow up my computer
so badly.

Will these changes in any way reduce my protection?
If so, is there any action I should take in the future?

Hi Howard,

I have SpySweeper, plus Windows firewall. I check my email on the server via
att.webmail before bringing up OE6 to download. Att has a pretty good
spamblocker.

Thanks!

Having made your recommended changes to the McAfee service settings, I find
things are indeed running a bit faster today, and that the McAfee logo no
longer appears on the bottom right of the screen as it used to.

I have two quick questions:

Have these changes compromised my protection in any way? If so, what must I
do to compensate for this?

If computers run better with these settings, why are they not default
settings?

I
It will speed up the PC, but it will no longer scan email, block spyware, PS
will not work at all, and realtime scanning will be disabled.

that is what mcafee forum admin says at least.

patch 2 should improves things as well.

I gave you settings for the McAfee Products of McAfee Security =
Center, VirusScan and Personal Firewall Plus installed. In your original =
post, you only have McAfee Security Center and VirusScan installed. I =
hope you have made adjustments and ignored the services not installed.

PeaceKeeper/Tony stated that you were not getting E-mail protection. =
That is not true, because when needed VirusScan does scan E-mails. Look =
at McAfee Network Agent. It is Set to Manual. But if you bring up the =
Task Manager, you see McNASvc.exe has been started. Services don't need =
to be set to Automatic for Services to be started.

McAfee Real-time Scanner is Set to Automatic, so how can it be that: =
Everything does not have to be Set to Automatic, in order for it to =
work. Plus, if you open up Services and look at the McAfee Services, you =
can see that everything unless disabled is started.

"It will speed up the PC, but it will no longer scan email, block =

---------
Yes, I've only installed Security Center and VirusScan. I followed your
settings advice just as you gave it -
I set network agent to manual, disabled redirector service, set scanner to
manual, system guards to manual, and user manager to manual. The other
settings were already as you indicated they should be. I just checked
however, and found that scanner is set to automatic - though I changed it to
manual.

----------
Apparently it is not in McAfee's interests for the user to make the changes
you recommended. But WHY would they want their software to unnecessarily
slow down buyers' computers? The slowdown is obviously due to this software,
and like myself, I'm sure many people have considered uninstalling it and
getting their money back - and some probably have. It makes no sense to have
as default settings those that cause a slowdown, unless essential for
functionality - this would indicate poorly written software, and I would
think that the McAfee engineers would know better. I am an engineer myself
(analog circuitry, not sofware), and this seems pretty funny to me.
