Need substitutes for AVG and AdAware

First AdAware, and now AVG, have ended support for Windows 98 in their
new versions. Can someone please suggest good freeware replacements for
those two on my Win98SE machine?

I've still got Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and SuperAntiSpyware running and
updated. Is that good enough until I finally upgrade to XP?

Thanks,
JPM

Just when were you planning to upgrade to XP?

Mmm, any day now... ; )

I'm not talking about being uptodate or even in MS's world of OS
support. I'm just tired of being increasingly unable to run sware.
Vista? Sooo many gripes about it OL and IRL.

Don't believe the hype - Vista works just fine.

...and when properly written programs become the norm, it will be even
better.

Most of the gripes are because of most user's affinity for bad practices
and unwillingness to learn safe computing. Those whom actually don't
need UAC and such (for whatever reason), can easily circumvent it.

Just wanted to note that if you wait long enough to upgrade to XP you
will be in a different boat - but up the same proverbial creek with the
same proverbial absent paddle.

...or by exploiting the "human nature" vulnerability of users. The
classic trojan is still alive and well, and not all malware relies on
exploitation of software vulnerabilities.

Those are only some aspects of some types of vulnerability exploits.

...and getting better every day as W98 users find less and less software
with support for that platform.

You are probably right, but malware that causes a crash is still
malware.

Wrong. Maybe for *most* of it but not for all.

That doesn't make it "useless" for most people - only for those that
simply *must have* the newest malware. :o)

Good info on Win98 defense, thanks.

Last year I tried to update my copy of Java JRE 5_14. The Java automatic
update tried to install JRE 6_3 on my system but the installation failed
with a message that 6_3 was for NT systems only.

I couldn't find JRE 5_19 on the Sun Java website so I downloaded 5_18.

When I went to uninstall JRE 5_14 I discovered that JRE 6_3 had installed
itself on my system. After uninstalling both JREs and installing JRE 5_18
my who system is faster again not just FF and IE.

I'm still running Win98 on my main 1g desktop (that I built in 1999). I
have XP on some laptops and it DOES make a big difference over Win98 on
those PCs. I also have it on a faster desktop when I need XP for programs
that only run on NT.

I use some old specialized software that doesn't work well on XP. Also
once a week or so when my system freezes, with XP it can take 5-10 minutes
to recover. With Win98, I can do a 3 finger and be back working in a
minute or two.

BTW, I don't even want to hear how XP doesn't crash! Besides, I can fix
the rare Win98 problems that I run into in a few minutes of trouble
shooting versus hours with XP.

Chas.
