I have taken it off quite a few of my clients' computers because it
did the same. Everything was set right for auto-updating but I found
on return calls that it hasn't been doing so. I now prefer AOL AVS
(sans "Security Tool Bar" or Avira Antivir (great program but the nag
screen bothers my clients; AOL AVS has no nag screen). the price for
Antivir is very reasonable and it's only free for personal use so my
business clients buy it in a heartbeat. See www.av-comparatives.org
for comparisons under Comparatives link, On-Demand Results..

I just purchased NOD32 for a year - after a thirty day trial.  Seems to work
alot better for me than four years of using AVG did.  Not that AVG is a
awful product.  I never had any problems on my primary user account.  The
problem with it I discovered was that despite daily updates and full system
scans - it wasn't detecting a dozen or so trojans,  I had in another user
account I hadn't used in ages (in deleted files folder - hotmail acct in
OE) - or in a backed up OE settings folder I had on my D: drive.

Those were found with Kaspersky's online scanner. Took me a few hours to get
rid of all of em manually.

The most usual cause recently for high svchost usage is
a problem with the Windows Update Service which is fixed by upgrading to the
Windows Update Agent 3.0, v. 7.0.6000.374, for 32 bit machines is available
here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
and installing the updated KB927891 hotfix, here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=927891 for a complete fix.

Re-install AOL's AVS, you'll be glad you did :)
