Hello Quilljar:

I haven't had the occasion to try this myself.  However,
BleepingComputer.com can be very highly trusted.

Please let us know if this helped in a reply.

Re: MS Removal Tool

Thank-you IPW.
After updating Malwarebytes and running it in Safe Mode the nasty thing was
erased. I also found independently Stopzilla, which was recommended by your
Bleeping Computer site and have installed it as a belt and braces attempt.
It was well reviewed on a number of sites. Sorry about the cross-post but I
was desperate last night!

All's well that ends well.

I hope you still followed all the Bleeping Computer instructions and
got rid of any remaining files/entries that may not be immediately
harmful.

We can work on getting my username right the next time...  :-)

I'm surprised you had a problem. AFAIK, the MS Removal Tool runs once
only during update, and is always targeted at a specific threat (which
the update is supposed to block.) So I don't think you had the genuine
thing, but just another piece of rogue anti-malware.

FWIW, I dumped Stopzilla. It's OK at finding and removing threats, but
it's also extremely intrusive. Borderlins rogue, IMO. YMMV

No, not that MSRT (Microsoft Software Removal Tool).
 :-))

MS Removal Tool is a rogue anti-virus software.
(and asks for payment for removal of "findings".)

Re: MS Removal Tool

Indeed this was NOT a Microsoft tool but a very nasty and fairly recent
piece of rogue malware, watch out for it because I am pretty well protected
and reasonably canny.

It wasn't a cross-post it was a multi-post. By posting the same
message in multiple groups, and then only responding with the
resolution in one of the groups, you made it difficult for those
seeking a solution for the problem. It is far better to cross-post
your message to all the groups you asked the question in because all
the groups can see the entire thread and resolution.  As it is you
insinuated that Malwarebytes could not remove the infection in
multiple groups, and then only rectified that misinformation in
alt.comp.anti-virus.

Re: MS Removal Tool

Well,  hope that as my problem was resolved by Malwarebytes (which I have
always relied upon,) that this thread has been useful. I expect most people
who read one newsgroup also read the other.
