 al> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_job

that's seems to be a good place to start ;)

al> Do you use Telnet to connect to Fidonet?

i can but i run my own BBS in fidonet... i read messages from numerous local
consoles at my location... rarely do i access any BBS for messages or files...
games (ie: the original tradewars, scrabble, and other BBS games from way
back), on the other hand, i do go to the BBS for...

al> Will RIPE Network Coordination Centre tell me who "Joe jobb"ed me?

no... there is no way to tell that...

RIPE is one of several of the IP number management centers... it happens to be
the one for europe and that part of the world... they hold all of the IP
numbers and partition out blocks of them out to organizations who purchase
them... they can't tell you anything about the traffic or its contents...

al> I wonder if it makes a difference putting messages from
al> mailer-daemon into the spam folder?

that depends on the filtering system and the specific content of the
messages...

Some of us do. :)

Grab yourself a copy of mtelnet. It supports ANSI graphics. BBS's are
meant to be seen in ANSI. :)

I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello?
Damn it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and
goes to voicemail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the
phone and run away?

at least in ANSI :)

i remember when the first real graphic bbs came out but i don't recall what
they called the protocol... there was also one fashioned after prodigy's
graphical protocol... i think robobbs was the first bbs to do true graphics
with a supporting terminal... the graphics thing didn't really go very far,
though... the next one was RIP IIRC... there might have been one between them,
though...

al> What I really wanted to ask you was: do people still use BBSs?

yes... there's still a lot around... no where near like there used to be,
though...

al>  cos i last used one i think ten years ago with hyperterminal, but
al> wikipedia told me about telnet. I've never used telnet before. Damn

hyperterminal is just a terminal program... tty, ansi, vt100, etc... telix,
procomm, qmodem, ZOC, ... they're all just terminal programs... how they
connect to the remote site doesn't really matter... yes, my system is available
via telnet as well as POTS... you should seek out one of the telnet bbs lists
that are still maintained ;)

al> Welcome to Microsoft Telnet Client

 al> Escape Character is 'CTRL+]'

 al> Microsoft Telnet> time.synchro.net:24
al> Invalid Command. type ?/help for help
 al> Microsoft Telnet> ?

do it this way, instead...

    C:> telnet time.synchro.net 24

the telnet client is very simplistic... it doesn't recognise the port after the
colon and it doesn't do file transfers with zmodem, ymodem, xmodem or any other
transfer protocols... you'll be lucky if ANSI color and cursor positioning work
properly...

al> Before the thread goes too OT, I was wondering being this is
 al> alt.comp.anti-virus if anyone had tried mrt.exe

what is mrt.exe?

al> I did a lot of BBSing in the mid 1990s. Saw ripscrip protocol in
al> Google images. I suppose it was meant for the late 1990s?

not sure what you're covering here...

al> In keeping with keeping old traditions alive, does Mark Lewis's
al> sursum-corda BBS have a phone number (for use with hyperterminal)?

that's marC lewis... not marK lewis... and yes, sursom-corda does show a POTS
number available... but hyperterminal also does telnet

al> And why do people in Google Groups want their posts deleted?

they don't want them archived... there's a big difference ;)

and it isn't just folks using google groups... there's a lot of folks all over
who feel the same way... perhaps their words have come back and bitten them
soundly on their arse in the past? ;)
