I was talking to this hacker who claims he can break into any computer
in the world, etc etc.  Being a junior programmer myself I could not
say I believed him 100%, though he was more of a low-level machine
language guy like you so maybe he knows tricks that are not even
published in mainstream media.  Of interest though is that he said
there is no difference between black hat and white hat hackers--they
both are the same thing. I've heard the same thing about crooks and
police in a cynical context.

So Dustin, in your retirement you could supplement your income by
working for the mafia being a black hat hacker instead of wasting your
time here. Or, in lieu of your "I'd buy that" comment, maybe you
already do?

A white hat reveals the exploits, so they can be corrected. A
black hat exploits them, or sells them, for profit (money or fame). Both
have the same skills, but not the same morals.
WTF does comp.os.linux.advocacy and comp.os.linux.setup have to
do with malware ?

He has admitted to being a blackhat, years ago. White hat now, or
maybe a grey hat (has fun studying the exploits, but does not use them
for profit or pass them on)

My bad. You quoted me. I took that as a reply to me. And , occasionally,
we seem to be wiseasses towards one another. Apologies for my
assholiness.

Well.. in a cynical sense, he's right. It's a matter of ethics. Blackhat
vs whitehat. same skills between both. Just one is more willing to do ..
shall we say, less than above board for the results. [g]

Black, or white?

Suppose you worked for your government to fight terrorism, and you were
working on a targeted worm to infiltrate their systems. Then, you
discover a wormable exploit that you can use as an auto distribution
mechanism. Do you do the responsible disclosure thing or do you sit on
that information until after infiltration?

White Hat is "Ethical Hacker" but it would still depend on your sense of
ethics.

In the vein of "one man's freedom fighter is another's terrorist"
Isn't that what guided the efforts to develop and distribute 'Stuxnet'?

Your mentor should be able to clue you in.

email him.

Good point.  And also if you are a White Hat for Israel you are, by
definition, a Black Hat for all of Israel's enemies. And vice versa.
The UK rocket scientist who was helping Iraq develop a high-powered
near ballistic artillery piece was assassinated by Mossad, the Israeli
secret service.  Bell was his name, without Googling it. OK I did
Google it and he was Canadian living in Belgium: http://en.wikipedia.org/wi =

sorry, i can't agree. when you enter the realm of cyber-warfare (where
your actions are good for your country but bad for others) then you
are not a white-hat. at best you are a grey-hat.

ethical warfare? please. sometimes doing bad things is necessary, but
lets not dress them up as good things.

Hi kurt. Maybe RayLopez99 is "invisible" to Dustin and it looked (to
him) like you were responding to him. I, myself, wondered about Dustin's
response.

As well as the conditions in which you find yourself in. IE: the example

He just loves to troll the Linux zealots. :o)

When I suggested an alternate boot, I didn't mean that it couldn't be
Windows or even the same version as the contaminated OS it just has to
be a different instance from the one from the contaminated disk.

Linux is indeed good for this.

I see.  So there's no need to use Linux after all.

If you have a Windows-based rescure CD / rootkit detector I'd like to
use it.  As I alluded to in another thread Linux LiveCD has given my
XP system problems if you don't exit the LiveCD properly (you then
need to do a chkdsk to repair your Windows NTFS HD on reboot).

Pull the other one!  As established in that other thread, the live CD did
_nothing_ to your NTFS hard drive.  The alleged problem happened when you
failed to shut down Windows cleanly.
