I want to garner what knowledge others may have about this program. It
seems to me that it is on topic as it may be a beneficial method to use to
protect information not only from prying eyes, but malware.

I'm trying to get as diverse forethought about the merits of the technique
as possible.

Is it off-topic?

Disguise Folders offers an ingenious way to hide  your folders in Win7 by
disguising them as system folders. You can disguise your folders as Action
Center, Personalization, Power Options, Show Desktop, Fonts, Performance,
Libraries, Recyclebin, Display, System, Troubleshooting, Windows Update,
Programs and Features, user Accounts, Notification Area or Homegroup.
Download and run this portable app. Select the folder you want to camoflage
by clicking on the Disguise button. Lets say you want to disguise ‘Secret
Folder’. Next select what you would like to hide it as. Lets say you select
Windows Update. Click Disguise Now. You will see your Secret Folder being
replaced by Windows Update! Try clicking this Windows Update folder and you
will actually see Windows Update opening! To recover your old folder: Click
on the Recover button and select the path of this ‘Windows Update’ folder.
Enter the Folder name viz Secret Folder and click Recover now. You will see
your Secret Folder back in place of the Windows Update folder. Portable
Stealth. Size: 143KB. Win 7. 32/64bit.

It's lame, won't fool those who know what they're doing and certainly
won't hide anything from malware.

The trick works by appending a class ID to the folder (directory)
name which means it's treated in a special way by Explorer (the file
browser). In other words, the explorer GUI will lie to you when
displaying the contents. It can't be hidden from a command prompt
'dir' listing or other program.

Example:

Recycle Bin.

If a name like that is used for a directory you will not see any file
inside unless it actually contains the database/files expected by the
system in a recycle bin.

I have considered your reply carefully and I reject it. I need hard info not
mild conjecture.

It was not conjecture.  Ant "knows" what he is writing about!

Hell, yeah - and without the inverted commas!

This, of course, is not the OP but the other Bear. And I don't care if
they're different people or just one suffering from schizophrenia.
Anyone who doesn't agree with my research can do their own. I welcome
constructive criticism.

I've had a good night at the pub - our team won the quiz!

Ant does not conjecture. Ant knows exactly what he is talking about. Bear, you
need
to know who is who on these groups.

No surprise there from *any* of the posters posting as "Bear".

No, you need something that agrees with your preconceived ideas - no
substitutes.
