I hate Avast

I just dumped Avast.  I installed it about 5 or 6 months ago.  I do
not run AV software all the time because it makes my computer run too
slow.  This is an older computer running Win98, and it's slow enough
as it is.  Normally I run a virus scan once a week, and more often if
I suspect some website I visited was infected.  I also scan individual
downloads, but just that file.  I have installed AVG also.  AVG seems
to work just fine, but it did miss a couple of worm files that I had
downloaded, which Avast found.  These were considered to be bed, but
not extreme.  I was not using them, just things I had downloaded and
forgot about and stored as .zip files.  Avast also went crazy about a
silly prank file I have that turns the screen upsidedown, called
badday.exe (which has never done anything except make the screen look
goofy.

With all of that in mind, I think AVG might be missing some of the
viruses, but at the same time, Avast is a pain in the ass to use.  For
one thing, it takes forever to load.  Then it goes nuts over that
prank file which I know is nothing to worry about.  But the most
annoying thing about it is that every time I run it, it insists that I
register it.  This began after the trial period.  I went on their site
and got the register number and installed it.  The next time I loaded
it, I had to enter that number again, and every time after that.  Then
yesterday it would not run even after I entered that number, so I went
on their site and got a new one.  I immediately entered that number
and it said "invalid number".  Even if it is a little better cirus
scanner than AVG, I am not going to put up with their annoying
registration crap any more.

I just posted this to see if anyone else has had this problem.

I suppose I should run a second AV program, besides AVG and my spyware
programs SPYBOT and ADAWARE .  But what else is there (free only)?

Thanks

George

AntiVir is better than AVG and Avast.

Does the free version of AntiVir scan e-mail also?

As far as I know, not via MAPI or VIM.  However since it performs "On Access"
scanning, as
an email is read or as a file is extracted from an email it will be scanned as
the
attachment is temporarily written to the TEMP folder.

Strange experience. Of all the AV softwares I tried (started with
McAfee) avast! was the one that had least impact on my Win98
performance. Still use it today both on Win98se and WinXP Pro.

I think it will take more than anti virus software to cure this guy's
problem.

As long as you're too cheap to buy a decent product, you're stuck with the
shite you have now.
