How do we remove the Avast NNTP outgoing message headers?
 X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 000736-2, 04/26/2007), Outbound message
 X-Antivirus-Status: Not-Tested

Is this a bug in avast?

How do we eliminate these two unwanted outgoing nntp message headers?

I already tried the suggestion to "right-click the Avast icon in systray.
Select "On-Access Protection Control" > Details > Internet Mail > Customize

But as can be seen in the nntp headers to THIS message, even after killing
and restarting Avast, and rebooting Windows XP, and double checking the
settings as shown in the photo below ... Avast! STILL insists on adding
unwanted headers to the outgoing nntp messages.

Is this insistance on adding outgoing nntp headers a known bug in Avast!
(does it happen to you too in your nntp posts?)

Please see my reply to your original thread.  One thread per problem is
plenty.  Thanks.

Hello Ernie B.

The first problem was how to eliminate the User-Agent header line in 40Tude
Dialog. That was solved by running the Pascal scripts
http://www.40tude.com/dialog/wiki/index.php/RemoveAnyHeader

That first thread was related to telling 40Tude Dialog to stop adding that
User-Agent: header.

This second thread is related to telling Avast! to stop adding the two
X-Antivirus: headers.

They are two totally separate issues, hence the two threads?

Or should I lump them together?
Your advice?

Okay.  I guess I didn't read them closely enough.  Mea culpa.

Did you make sure the last two checkboxes were unchecked?

[  ] Insert note into clean inbound news
[  ] Insert note into clean outbound news

There is no need to scan inbound and outbound mail or news as long as
you keep the resident shield active. It's just hype.

No and no.

Yes. Definately.

Interesting!

I don't see how they could be related, but, following your advice, I turned
inbound virus scanning off. Based on your recommendations, I hope this
finally elimates Avast! adding its own headers to the outgoing nntp
messages.

I think you found the Avast! bug!

Look at the headers in this message!

Here is what happened:
a) We turn off OUTBOUND adding of headers, yet the outbound Avast headers
still get added to the outgoing nntp messages.

b) Yet, if we also turn off INBOUND scanning, then and only then, do the
outbound headers not get added by Avast!

It would be nice if someone else could reproduce this before we report this
reproduceable bug to Avast!

You might want to test after removing that "X-Newsreader-removing"
script, just to be sure *it* isn't causing your problem. I would.

Well, we did it together, each adding their value.

I've removed the Pascal script from 40Tude Dialog for this post.
I've turned on inbound but not outbound Avast! scanning of NNTP & SMTP.
I've turned off the adding of additional nntp headers in Avast!.

Let's check the header to see if Avast still insists on adding a header.

Re: How to remove Avast! nntp X-Antivirus outgoing message headers

Avast! bug confirmed!

Notice that the previous message had outbound scanning and insertion of
NNTP X-Antivirus headers disabled - yet these two headers were inserted
nonetheless!

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 000736-2, 04/26/2007), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Not-Tested

I'm confident enough in the bug to state that the headers in THIS message
will not show the two X-Antivirus lines inserted by Avast! because for this
message, I've turned off inbound scanning (which affects this message even
though this is an outbound message).

I guess I'll open a separate thread on HOW to report this bug to Avast so
they can fix it.

Thanks everyone for finding this bug together!
