How to get rid of ads in the web sites?

I used to use Norton Internet Security, however, a friend of mine told me
about AVG anti-virus. Now that I have deleted Norton and installed AVG, the
ads on most websites are back. When I had Norton, the ads wouldn't show up
on the site while surfing. I was wondering how do i get rid of all these
aggravating ads on most sites. I'm not talking about new pop up windows, i'm
talking about ads on most sites that i visit.

thanks
G

I use the MVPS hosts file to block most ads along with Firefox's Adblock
Plus.

Thanks for the reply, can you enlighten me on this MVPS hosts file? I'm not
familiar with this.
The other thing you mentioned, I do have Firefox, but i usually use IE,
however, i can use firefox.
The Firefox adblock plus, is this a download? I've never heard of this
either.
But if this helps, I will certainly change to firefox, and download whatever
I need.

Max, thanks again for replying to my posts, and helping me. I want to say
sorry for being so ignorant of how some of these things work, however, I've
downloaded the addon for mozilla, but it's an 'XPI' file, i thought it would
be an exe file or something that would load itself.
Once again, i appologize for being ignorant of these files, and would
appreciate a little more deatil as to what to do with the xpi file, and the
hosts file.

thanks
G

Tools > Add-ons > Extensions > Install. Then navigate to the *.xpi file,
highlight it, and click Open. Firefox will install it. You activate it
after installation by going to Extensions, highlighting and clicking Enable.

I, too, am a bit concerned about pop-ups.  I use Internet Explorer v7,
but not Firefox.  I also uninstalled Norton Internet Security which
was effective in blocking pop-ups, but caused me problems in other
areas.  In IE, I have Tools/Pop-up Blocker turned on, but still get
some pop-ups for surveys, ads, etc.

Is there a similar type "xpi" file for IE?

Thanks

Yes, Charliec, per "Kayman's" post, go to
http://www.ie7pro.com /

this did the trick for me, and I had the exact same problems as you are
talking about. I first had Norton, which after i see some other programs,
norton was crap!! This ie7pro does a lot more than just get rid of pop ups,
it's really nice.

Another good place but, isn't software is use the HOSTS file:
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File:

Hope this helps further :-)

To the OP:
From the page this poster linked to, I use HostsXpert to manage the
localhost file and Homer to serve up a little blue slash mark instead
of some giant ad from the servers blocked by the localhost file.

This works GREAT and really speeds up surfing in addition to keeping
unwanted parasites from attaching to IE.

I ahve had performance issues in the past using the huge hosts file. I find
that spywareblaster does a fair amount of work getting rid of the pesky
adverts, especially the less savoury ones that use tracking cookies..

If they are ads for the site owner's own products, I write them an
annoyed letter pointing out that ads aren't needed - I'm already there,
so why are they wasting bandwidth and customer good will by assaulting
me with noise and jerky video, etc? I also warn them that if things
don't improve, my next visist will be my last. May not have much effect,
but makes me feel better.

As for ads by "sponsors", well, until people in general get fed up with
the notion that advertising is "free speech", and hence can appear
anywhere, you'll see even more ads.

And it ain't free in the financial sense. You and I pay for it. In
N.America we spend more on advertising on education. We complain about
high education taxes, yet seem oblivious to the private tax lifted from
our pockets by corporations so they can persuade us to buy even more of
their crap.

Bah!
