no worries... i've been known to be liberal with a killfile myself,
sometimes even using it on people i just found boring... besides, if i
say something really useful or meaningful i'm sure someone who hasn't
killfiled me yet will quote it or repeat it somewhere...

if i could make a suggestion though (not just to phil but to anyone),
if you find someone who seems to be feeding the trolls too much but may
otherwise be of value to the group, say something to them... i
completely agree with not feeding the trolls, but i also like to give
people the benefit of the doubt (at least until it becomes clear to me
that they are being disingenuous and are not really interested in
reasoned debate)... if someone lets me know that they think i'm feeding
a troll or better still points out some example of unreasonableness
that i maybe overlooked then that may hurry me along in making the
troll determination and ceasing...

Re: group content quality

kurt wismer AKA kurtw@sympatico.ca in alt.comp.virus on 9/13/2006,after
much thought, came up with this jewel:

 well folks, i think we're all aware that we've got a signal/noise
ratio problem going on at the moment with what appears to be the
entire group of participants of the aptly named alt.usenet.kooks
 (auk) cross-posting into alt.comp.virus and alt.comp.anti-virus...

most of you regulars have probably killfiled them all so you don't see
their posts but i'm afraid those who come here looking for help most
certainly will.. most will probably be using google groups or an
equivalent because almost nobody bothers trying to figure out news
readers and news servers for the first time just to be able to ask for
help with a virus/worm/trojan problem (and why should they for a
one-off question in a support group?)...

the auk-noise makes up over 1/3 of the new threads so far this month,
and the total message count turns out to be somewhere around 548 of
770 messages for alt.comp.virus (and probably similar for
 alt.comp.anti-virus) - which makes the group about 70% auk-noise...

that's no good for community driven malware support groups and the
perpetrators have made it clear that they are unrepentent so i suggest
we try a petition... if we get enough names saying we don't want your
off-topic nonsense in our groups they might [holds up thumb and index
finger very close together] change their ways... alternatively, the
petition might serve as a valuable form of ammunition to an
enterprising net.cop, should one happen to be around (and lets face
it, a net.cop is better than a net.mob)... at any rate, i really
think we need to make our feelings on this matter known as silence
has already been interpreted in other ways...

so just reply and add your name

we, the undersigned, don't want to see the network abusing, off-topic,
crossposted nonsense from alt.usenet.kooks in alt.comp.virus or
 alt.comp.anti-virus anymore:

Re: group content quality

You keep harping about this. I suggest that you let it go. You'll be
next on the hit list if you continue with this making yourself stand
out, as they are looking, particularly K-Hen. Hopefully, this will run
its course quickly, if you don't bring attaention to it. It's just a
game on their part.

Both of these NG(s) don't have the traffic flow so that they can't be
choked out and shut down by the cross posting and bringing in other
trolls. What do you think is happening here?

K-Ken hasn't really squatted in either NG. I am telling you. If she
comes and squats in these NG(s) and stays for awhile, she'll choke them
out as much as she can do it, making them into a cesspools of cross
posting and other trash dumped into the NG(s). All will be attacked new
comers as well in an attempt to shut down the NG.

I have seen her do it with two NG(s) with little traffic like these
NG(s) where she choked them out and all the people left. I haven't
checked one of the NG(s). But one is just know coming back to life as
that clown shut it down playing the troll's game by the troll's bible.
And she kept it up quite awhile before she let go.

I give you all the link again and I suggest that you read it as to what
they are trying to do. They are playing by set rules and they have a
purpose. If you get in their face like you're trying to do, then you're
asking for it.

You shouldn't be ignorant as to what is going on here, as you're playing
right into their hands. You come-up with some kind of petition, which is
a joke, they will laugh at it and hammer even harder.

Hell, for all you know, Dustin the target could be imporsonated as an
excuse to keep up the cross posting.

You can add my name to the petition. And then, can you tell me how
'killfile' is set? More importantly, can it be done if using
(primitive) OE as a newsreader? Thansk

killfiling is essentially a process of filtering out posts by people
you don't wish to see posts from... generally this is done on a person
by person basis... i'm not really familiar with OE myself, but i just
fired it up and it looks like it's filtering may actually allow for a
more generic filter...

click on tools->message rules->news to create a new filter... there
should be 3 steps, first choose the filter condition that says 'where
the message is on the specified newsgroup', then set the action to
'delete it', and finally click on the highlighted 'specified' in the
rule description and choose alt.usenet.kooks... as i said, i'm not
familiar with OE, but i think that should filter out all posts that are
crossposted from alt.usenet.kooks, and that should take care of the
majority of the current clutter...

Just select a 'kurt wismer poast', then go to 'Message', then 'Block
Sender'. Easy.

_____

Using 'Outlook Express' as your newsreader you have two choices.

#1.  Select a message in the list of messages, then click on 'Message' in
the tool bar, then click on 'Block Sender' in the drop-down menu.  This will
block all future messages with THAT PARTICULAR 'From:' name.

#2.  For a more global approach, create a rule that deletes all messages
that are cross-posted to alt.usenet.kooks.  The only way these malevolent
cretins can run their train is to have a common cross-post address so that
the few dozen participants (who constantly change identifier) can pump up
the noise.

    a.  To create this rule you first have to 'Subscribe to
'alt.usenet.kooks' (don't worry - once the rule is in place, ALL the
messages that have 'alt.usenet.kooks' in the 'Newsgroups:' line will be
blocked.

NEXT
    b.  Click on 'Tools' in the toolbar.
    c.  Select 'Message Rules' in the drop-down menu and then select 'News'
from the fly-out menu.

NEXT
    d.  Click on 'New' on the property sheet.
    e.  In 'Select Conditions for your rule', check the box 'Where the
message is on a specified newsgroup.
    f.  In 'Select Actions for your rule', check the box 'Delete it'.
    g.  In 'Rule Description', click on the underlined word 'specified'.
    h.  Select the newsgroup name 'alt.usenet.kooks' from the list
displayed.

Finally, give a name to the rule (can be any unused name.)

My suggestion is to use both choices.
