Can someone recommend a good alternative firewall to Zonealam that is stable
and less prone to interfering with the running of Windows XP please?

What version? How is it interfering?  Blocking programs from calling
out?  Blocking stuff from getting in?  Those are its jobs. Have you set
it to allow known good programs?

That said, try Kerio. Free for personal use. The trial version turns
into the free version.

Comodo is a real alternative. FREE:

Actually liked it. Especially the extra info on things (traffic,
activity etc), but it miss the tray indicator from ZA (the red/green
bars that show the network traffic). The dull useless Comodo icon is
only annoying. Why donæt they have an option to show traffic there?

(could enable the standard Windows network icon, but that is not that
good, as it doesn't show the amount of traffic like the ZA icon did)

I'll test Comodo for a while and see how it affects speed and
resources...

One not though. It takes up EVEN MORE memory then ZA (max 36, nominal
27 MB, ZA used max 34, nominal 16 MB, that's almost twice the amount)
