Free AV using the least resources

Thinking of moving to either Avast or Antivir.  Anyone know which of the
two uses the least resources?  TIA.

Re: Free AV using the least resources

Avast, compared to Antivir is a monster with resources. Antivir is
super light weight and best of all it has one of the best detection
rates.
Check out this Comparison for further details on its detection rate -

Avira, i recently moved from avast to avira and can't fault it, especially
like the ability to schedule scans/updates.
Better detection rate also.

I did same thing, I like Avira. There was a complaint about the pop up
window, but I dont' object, tells me there was a successful update.

Hi Leon. How do you know it has a better detection rate?

After removing avast and then installing and running avira, avira found the
following 3:
HTML script virus HTML/Dro.WOW.CH.2.C
Backdoor program BDS/Ontarg.E
Trojan horse TR/PSW.Banker.BA

Avast never found these.

Do these show up using one of the free online scanners?

Bit late for that, deleted them weeks ago, i would never use online scanners
anyway.

Re: Free AV using the least resources

If I can be slightly facetious for a moment...
The free antivirus with the least resource use is YOU.
Despite being the av "expert" for a Uni, at home I don't run
any av. I do have a router with integral firewall between my
machines and the internet, but apart from that I depend on my
family and myself knowing not to go to dodgy websites or open
dodgy emails. Pretty much, that's all there is to it.

I have some sympathy with that.

I would take one more precaution though: don't run with Administrator
(or Power User) privilege.  The excellent makemeadmin scripts help with
this:
