My option in XP to start the firewall is greyed out. I've tried to get in
there through the control panel, and the 'windows firewall' with no luck. Is
there a registry setting that I can turn the firewall on with?

Re: firewall is greyed out

Hi Pete,

Try running Chkdsk at boot and see what happens? When you receive a
Generic Host Error at boot, it usually turns off the Windows
Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service. Running Chkdsk at Boot
usually fixes the problem, until the next occurrence. Repeat the procedure.

But also check the status of how it is set to start up. Use Services
located in Adminstrative Tools. which can be Pinned to Start Menu, to access
easier the next time.

Google is your friend.

Re: firewall is greyed out

Another post gave me this suggestion which worked:

Check Event Viewer for errors. Check that 'Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS)' service is set to 'Automatic' and try starting
from there.
