F-Secure problems

Our cable company offers three free subscriptions to F-Secure virus
protection.  We used it for a while until it started taking over our
machines so I uninstalled it.  On one of our computers if left a 104MB file
that refuses to be deleted.  I tried all the tricks--renaming it, unchecking
the read-only properties, etc.  I logged on as administrator and still could
not delete it.  I keep getting a "Cannot delete.  Access is denied.  Made
sure the disk is not full or writ-protected and that the file is not
currently in use."  Anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of this
file?

For starters I'd suggest that you try deleting it in safe mode.

I tried that--safe mode without networking.  This thing really has a
strangle hold on my computer.

Have you tried Safe Mode - Command prompt only?

Assuming you've tried
attrib -r -s -h [name]
(you often need to do all 3 attributes in the one command), then...

Treat it as you would a virus - have a look in msconfig's startup and services
sections, and
in the registry, to find out why it's in use, clean that up, then delete it.

Or you could contact FSecure... the resellers I've dealt with have been very
helpful.

Are you with Shaw? I have F-Secure, rebranded as Shaw Secure. The file
you're citing doesn't look like anything Shaw or F-Secure embeds on a
system, at least not on mine.

There ARE freeware utilities out there that will delete a file regardless of
what Winders says. I'm not sure what they are called, or IT is called. But
if you go into alt.comp.freeware and query the people there you'll likely
get a rapid response. They're very good....

Another idea I just had, Anne. Are you trying to delete the upper branch
(the main parent) of the child? Go INTO the tree and start pruning from
below. Even going to the bottom most branch and deleting the files INSIDE
that folder. I frequently get the cannot delete error message if I try to
delete from the top most branch (the main parent). Just a thought....
