F-Secure is system hog

Our ISP provides free keys for up to three machines for the F-Secure
Anti-virus, but I have found that it is almost totally incompatible with my
Athlon systems.  One of my Athlons (XP 2400+ 2.0 ghz, 1GB ram) wouldn't even
boot once it was installed.  The other one, (XP 2000 1.67 Ghz, 1 GB ram)
ran--but barely.  However, our machine with a Pentium 4 does seems to handle
the program a little better.  What is the point of an anti-virus program
that slows your computer to a crawl?  Anyone else have this problem with
F-Secure?

I changed back to McAfee 10.0

I bet if you remove McAfee properly it would work fine. Yeah it's
kinda heavy but not near as intrusive as McAfee's consumer stuff.

One of the machines never had McAfee on it.  I think I did a pretty good job
of removing all traces of it, including registry keys and folders.  I just
can't see the point of an application that makes a machine run so slow.
What do you find intrusive about McAfee?  I buy the CD at Costco, so I don't
have to deal with their automatic renewal shenanigans.
