Just an anecdote, may be useful to some:
I wanted to eliminate Avira, something went wrong in the Uninstall (I
have no idea what), and Avira a) was still present in the \Programs
folder; and b) continued to do its thing even though it no longer showed
up as an installed program. I of course could not delete it, as its
files were all locked. I finally went into Safe Mode, and used regedit
to delete all references to Avira. Then I was able to delete the \Avira
However, removing Avira on my wife's laptop worked without a hitch.
