Hi guys,
advice please, computer keeps re-booting all the time, never gets past the
loading windows xp stage then constantly repeats this sequence. Is this a
virus, if so is there anything I can do to repair it
Thanks and Regards

These symptoms are most often caused by hardware failures such as by bad; RAM,
CPU, CPU
fan, etc.

Or driver updates the OP neglected to mention that he/she installed.
Rebooting and using "last known good configuration" might work.

BH,

Is this an old machine that previously worked or a new one?

Will it boot into safe mode?

Would it, by chance, be an HP that you recently ran Service
Pack 3 on?

Re: Computer keeps re booting

Hi the machine is around 3 years old, it was working in the morning then in
the afternoon when it was switched on it started the rebooting sequence
constantly, no it is a computer shop assembled machine.  Coul not get it
into the safe mode just kept rebooting

Re: Computer keeps re booting

A few things to try. Strip the machine of all hardware not needed to boot,
drives, extra memory, usb devices, etc. Try pressing F8 to get into the safe
boot screen. If so select the option to halt on system error. This will stop
rebooting and show the blue screen. May be able to get the error code.
Boot the system disk to get in the hardware console. find the DrWatson dump
and analyze.

Two other possibilities:

a) bad BIOS ROM battery - replace it.
b) boots sector infection (get a recsue CD that deals with boot sectors.)

The BIOS doen'st need a battery.  It is the CMOS which needs the battery to keep
the date
and options made when you go into the BIOS and change it's settings.  However,
this will
NOT cause spontaneous reboots.  The CMOS is read during POST, not after the OS
is running.

Boot sector infectors would not cause a spontaneous reboot either.
