Can anyone recommend a Free AntiVirus program now that AVG Free 2011 is
malfunctioning on many (but not all) machines?  They do not appear to be
able to fix the update problem and I need up-to-date protection.

Who would you recommend?

Windows XP.

Thanks !

You talking about AVG Free or the paid version?

AVG FREE.  The first problem was interfering with e-mail sending - the
workaround was to uninstall and reinstall without e-mail scanning.
The new problem is failure of Update manager, on some machines but not
on others.

How to disable the "commercial" of Avira AntiVir:

N.B. the "default" update is only once per day.
It is recommended to "insert" some jobs to update more times per day.

I ran Avira for at least three years on all three of my Windows XP
machines. Then a couple of months ago all three of them started crashing
about once a day or even more often. I was also responsible for several
other people having Avira on their machines and they were having the same
problem.
Avira finally acknowledged the problem and were supposedly going to have it
corrected in early December. Lots of people went back to earlier versions.
I switched over to Avast. In reading the Avira forums I haven't seen any
comments about whether it is actually fixed or not.
Search for "Avira memory leak".

A quick update on this problem
I installed the current version of Antivir (10.0.0.609) 5 days ago and
have not seen any reoccurence of the memory leak issue, so it would
appear that the update fixed the problem ;) . This thread can now be
closed.
Thanks to all involved in resolving this issue :D

Possibly, but Martin6408 is not the first one to report it was working
only to find out that it had maybe "improved" a bit but the problem was
still there. He closed the thread because he started it.
There are several threads in the Avira forums about it, but no sticky or
any confirmation from Avira itself that the problem has been solved.
I have now switched all my machines to Avast. There is a port 119 problem
with Avast but it is correctable.

Yes, and after he used version 609 for five(5) days.
So he concluded that the problem was really solved.
(usually a lot of people never report back that a problem is solved,
as you know very well.)

I suppose that after 5 days one can assume the problem was solved?
Or do you require a longer period?
How much longer?

It amazes me that you want someone to write a "sticky" that this problem
is solved, while Avira never writes a "sticky" that a specific problem
is solved.

Whatever, and what more not yet reported problems may Avast have and
will come out in the near future?

First you do not read what "comment" is available at the Avira forum.
Than when it is shown to you, you do not believe what is written.
I cannot avoid the impression that you require from Avira actions that
will never happen, as you could well know.

If you prefer not to believe what is written, that is your choice.
I am not a representative of Avira, I just tried to help, so

I was using Avira, but have switched to MS Essentials on a winxp and a
windows 7 machine. Both work fine and update approx. each day. I believe
you will need to have automatic windows update set, but I always have
anyway.

Perhaps I will try Avast since it is mentioned twice and no problems
were described.

Any other suggestions?

Is Microsoft Security Essentials an AntiVirus alone or is it other
programs as well?   In other words, would I have to uninstall ZoneAlarm
or any other program in order to use it?

I never really thought that I had any problems with Zone Alarm

For one, because it is bloated and it is known to cause problems. I used
Free ZA myself until it caused problems with my home network.
Uninstalling ZA was the solution. I replaced it with Sygate Personal
Firewall and my problems were gone. (I now use Online Armor Free.) And
then there was that time when ZA f*cked after a Windows Update (and they
admitted it was their fault, not M$'s). Suddenly, ZA users couldn't go
online anymore.
