BOO/Mebrot.A

Dell XP Pro, SP3
2 hard drives, 750Gb and 160Gb.
Avira flagged both MBRs with BOO/Mebrot.A
So I Googled around and someone suggested using a restore CD, going into
system recovery console, and running FIXMBR. The second drive had an old
Windows installation on it so the recovery console had given me the option
of 1: C\WINDOWS or 2: D\WINDOWS. I picked 1.
When I rebooted, Avira no longer flagged the first drive, but still did the
2nd one. So I did the recovery console again and picked 2: D\WINDOWS.
However Avira continues to flag the second drive. There was nothing
important on that drive anyway, so I used an old 98 boot disk, and FDISK to
totally remove the single 160Gb partition. And then reformatted it in NTFS.
BOO/Mebrot.A is still there, or at least Avira says it is.
I downloaded a Symantec tool that was supposed to get rid of it but it
claimed it didn't find it.
So how do I clean up that MBR?

Meanwhile, I got it figured out.
Win98 boot disk + FDISK / MBR did the trick!

Option 1:

Select the correct drive and rebuild the mbr...

Option 2 since you don't care about the data:

Thanks Dustin. I already got it figured out but I went ahead and downloaded
that partition manager anyway for possible future use.

I had forgotten about the /MBR switch for FDISK. I booted up with my old 98
disk again and ran that and it worked. What really surprised me is that I
had already formatted the drive in NTFS and it didn't mess that up either.
Apparently the MBR and the format are independent of one another.

Now if I could just figure out something that would kick me in the ass
when I post as "Retired". :-)

Which I am, actually.

You've earned it then. :) And kudos on the old fdisk /mbr trick. The
file system and MBR aren't totally dependent on each other, no. However,
the drive won't be bootable on it's own until you replace that mbr. You
can use it for file storage in the meantime, tho.

You need to make yourself a winPE disc at some point, It would come in
very handy for you. Of course, you can always fix the mbr back to ntfs
bootable with the partition software later. :)

This guy is just using it for extra storage anyway.
My 98 boot disk is actually a boot CD I made in lieu of a floppy drive.
I have a fairly recent Hiren's CD but I couldn't find anything on it
that would do the trick. I'm not familiar with winPE but I'll look it up
and add it to my arsenal. Thanks.
