If you are happy to pay to get the best, go for Kaspersky Anti Virus
(KAV) or Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS).  Apart from being one of the
top two solutions (probably THE top and with their innovative new 2009
version coming along it will definitely be top),it has a fantastic forum
where experienced and helpful users (and Kaspersky staff) give fast
answers to any problem you may present to them (really fast - minutes,
usually!!!).

I have no connection with Kaspersky Lab but have been a satisfied user
of KIS for two years now having previously used AVG, AVAST, Norton,
McAfee, and others.  During that time I have asked many questions in the
Kaspersky forum and have always got helpful responses very quickly.

Hope this helps

NOD32 and Kaspersky are the best, but NOD32 is a little better?

I use NOD32.

And I use Avira Antivir (freeware)  as a "second opinion" av-scanner.

I started in 1998 with Norton, which was pants, so I scrapped it and threw
away the disk, losing 35 in the process.

I looked around for a bit and then picked NOD32 in 1999 and I've never
looked back.  It's small and doesn't clag up your system, and it has a good
hit rate for viruses.  Costs not a lot for a year.

My partner has AVG and is happy with it, but I believe that you get what you
pay for, so I'm happy paying.

Hi

I'd be sure to 'try before you buy' with KAV. I bought a 2 year 3
compute licence for the computers in my home and regret it. KAV slows
the computer up considerably and has caused various problems.  I agree
that the Kaspersky forum is a good place but I'd suggest that you look
at some of the problems and solutions posted in the forum and decide
if you'd want to be dealing with such issues and carrying out the
solutions recommended. I consider myself reasonably experienced with
computers but find KAV very difficult to live with.  The reason I
visited this forum today is to look for recommendations for an
alternative.

I agree with this. I will probably NOT be renewing my KAV subscription when
it expires.

Of course, the fact that you've had to ask many questions in their support
forum isn't a good thing.  Sure it's good they have a nice forum, but an
excellent product wouldn't require users to go seek help in that way.

AVG and AVAST are pretty good.  NOD32 also.   McAfee and Nortons seem to
have faults.    I'm not sure there is a best.  I've had AVG on 3 PC's
for years and no issues.   AVG8.0free seems to be more in depth now.

I've monitored the microsoft.public.windowsxp.....  groups since the
beginning of the year and no one can come up with a consensus.  Its like
cars, everyone says X is better.  Best ideas is safe surfing and save
email use.   Don't open or okay anything you do not know!

I know, this doesn't give you a finite answer but for me to save AVG
means really little except, well one more person likes it.

I do hear more and more complaint thought that mcafee and norton seem to
give people troubles.  I worked in a software development environment
for 15 years and we had more problems with Norton and Mcafee interfering
with our software, a network database application.   However we had a
norton corporate copy running on our server and updating and protecting
all the workstations.  So you can't throw that stone too far.

But anything is better than nothing, that I'm sure you can understand.

Re: Best Antivirus Software

Do what I did. Just do a 30 day trial of Kav and then a thirty day of
nod and decide for yourself what you like better.  I actually tried
out a few of the other top rated paywares as well.

I chose nod because its less intrusive, causes zero problems, and is
as light on resources as your gonna find out there. It's actually the
only one I tried that had almost no noticable lag.

I've had nod32 for almost a year and not one complaint so far on my
end.

A little research shows which is the best. There are other factors
involved though.Operating System, memory"Ram".How old the pc is ect...
What web pages are visited. How much money one has to pay for
protection.Bitdefender,Eset,Kaspersky are top rated and free ones rated
the highest are Avast,Avira and AVG.it's like anything else we do.We
choose what is best for us under the circumstances.
