Avira wants to uninstall everything

I just uninstalled Securit (a ripoff provided by the ISP) and went to
install the free version of Avira.
I came up with this... http://mewnlite.com/incompat.jpg

"Avira has identified potential incompatible software on your computer.
  - blah blah -
The following products must be uninstalled manually:
  Javacool SpywareBlaster
  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  SUPERAntispyware Free Edition"

When and why did they start that crap? I have it all installed on my own
computer and it doesn't cause any problems. MBam is the paid version on
mine and is running in the background all the time.

If you remeber we were being spammed for opswat.com such as the following ?

"I think you should check out hxxp://www.opswat.com/ there are 2 or 3 products
that may be
a match, I think that OESIS Framework at
hxxp://www.opswat.com/products/oesis-framework
provides a single interface to many antivirus packages. Another option is I
think Metascan
at hxxp://www.opswat.com/products/metascan which is more for ISV, I also found
that many
antivirus engines certified by OPSWAT at hxxp://www.opswat.com/certified "

Well Avira has included in the installation process the Opswat.com uninstall
utility
"AppRemover_CLI.exe" which reads a password protected ZIP file that tells it
what to
uninstall.  Just IGNORE it's suggestions.

I just bypassed it and it installed OK. I think I'll post something in the
Avira Forum about it just to hear their excuse.

Please do also mention about the Opswat spammer who took on several Usenet names
but
always posted from; 209.220.223.27 [ XO Communications ].  Very consistently
with the
content I quoted (but obfuscated the URL) in this thread.

MBAM and Avira happily co-exist nad MBAM does pickup where Avira leaves off so
there is NO
REASON why MBAM should be removed prior to installing Avira Desktop.

All kind of anti-virus/spyware/malware software gives messages that they
don't like the presence of the competition.
Just ignore these messages and proceed.

On my PC I have NOD32 (real time), Avira Free (AvGuard disabled), MBAM
(real time - paid) and SAS (on demand) installed.
I just ignore all messages as you mention and I have no problems.

Well, as I replied to Dave....

Sometimes I forget to change "Retired" to "Li'l Abner"  :-)

There may be "conflict of interest" if not system problem installing
multiple virus scanners! :)

I guess the concept escapes you.

  Javacool SpywareBlaster
  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  SUPERAntispyware Free Edition

Are NOT "virus scanners".

Are they also scanners? I should have not specified the type of scanners.

AFAIK all current anti-malware either is a specialised scanner (rare),
or is a suite that includes scanners (common). The suites also include
shields ("active protection"), and may include other tools.

None are "virus" scanners.  SAS and MBAM target non-viral malware in the form of
trojans.

Javacool SpywareBlaster isn't a file level scanner of any form.

Dave, I think the battle has been lost. For the ordinary user, "virus"
means any kind of malware, and any kind of malware is a virus. I've
given up trying to maintain the distinctions, and use "malware" and
"AMware".

But I suspect that "virus" will become the generic term. Pity, but there
it is.

Have a good day,

There's even a perfectly logical taxonomy laid out that has "Virus" as
the umbrella term. I don't like it, but to use correct terminology
within that structure we would have to refer to Epeian Viruses as
opposed to all other kinds of viruses i.e., the ones that replicate.
