Avira crashing System--

Running Win Xp Home 512 MB Ram with plenty of disk space.
For as long as I can remember I have  run Avira Free  but suddenly it
crashes my machine when updating and I get the "dumping memory to disk"
screen forcing a restart.
I tried to uninstall it and this also crashed ! I then decided to
download and reinstall / repair the program but was eventually forced to
uninstall and turn to Avast--- machine back to normal.
Could this be a sudden demand for more memory ?
Your ideas please, Richard

512MB is totally an insufficient amount of RAM.  Especially at Today's RAM
prices.
Regardless of WinXP crashing or not.

Back when WinXP was popular, 512M was considered lots of RAM!

When RAM was *more* expensive and a couple Service Packs prior.

One would see great improvement going from .5GB to 1.0 ~ 1.25GB

Let's whether Mr. Oliver's motherboard could handle more RAM...

Intel i815 chipset could support at most 512M SDRAM. :)

I can remember a couple of computers with XP that came out with only 128Mb
of ram and *lots* of them with 256. Doubling that to 512 made a helluva
noticeable difference. Unless they're running a lot of stuff I usually
don't push people to go any higher.

Of course I've got 8 Gb in my own dual boot machine. But XP (which is my OS
of choice) only uses about 3.5Gb of it. Now *my* machine would crawl on
512.

It could be that the memory you already have is defective. As long as
you're going to buy some more, get a gig and leave the 512 out. If that
cures it, then you could always add it back in and see if that was it.

Re: Avira crashing System--

Thanks again for all the most interesting replies--
I have checked the motherboard specs (Foxconn760GXK8MC)
Will confirm this with my computer techies also for price etc.
But must say that I have never had a problem when  running large
databases and multitasking and Avira has been the first to give this
problem.Maybe a bad download as somebody suggested ?
I have run Memtest which reports that memory is Ok,
Kind regards,Richard
