Avira - Can't Connect

I keep hearing fairly good things about Avira, so I uninstalled Avast.  No
problem.  Installed Avira, and it brought every thing up to date.  However,
now if I Start Update, or Product Update, it times out in 20 sec. and
notifies that it cannot connect to the internet.  All other web sites
connects, so why can't this one?  Has anyone else experienced this?  Their
tech support is non-existent.  It looks as if I may have to go back to
Avast.

Re: Avira - Can't Connect

Try re-installing. Make sure you obtain your copy from the parent website. I
have had no problems with Avira nor have any of my customers.

Quilljar, I did download it from the parent website.  I'll give it one more
day to connect, then swooooosh, out it goes.

Maybe you can go back to Avast now.
Do you really think that your threats to do this or do that will help.

Re: Avira - Can't Connect

Fred, I'm not making threats, just stating facts.  I can have any virus
protection I want, but like to give them all a try, and expect a well touted
program to work.  If it does, fine.  If it doesn't, then there is always
another in line.  No threats, just facts my man.

If Avira isn't working for you it's not Avira that's the problem.

Do it again. Maybe it was corrupt the first time. Shit happens.

...or go back to Avast! - or another if you like.

Shit will *still* happen.

I have Avira Antivir Free installed and I have updates scheduled every
two hours.
Usually there are no problems.

But today version 9 of Avira (paid and free) has come out, and is
included in the updates, so maybe the servers are now somewhat
overloaded?

I have set up Avira to update automatically once a day. It usually
connects and completes an update in a few seconds but occasionally it
reports a fail to connect.

Maybe reinstall (after uninstalling) or perhaps it is a firewall issue.
There have been times when Avira (free) failed to connect, but those were
rare and self-correcting after a bit.

One of the problems with Avira is less than totally reliably update
server connects.  The default with Avira is to update once per day.
With updates that fail, it could be 3 days, or more, before you
eventually get an update.  Most Avira users add more scheduled jobs in
Avira's scheduler to look for update every 3 or 4 hours (Avast defaults
to 4 hours but can be change easily with a config setting).

Expect updates to fail when trying to connect to their free version
update server.  As a consequence, configure Avira to update more often
so you aren't waiting days to get an update.

Thanks Vangard.  I'll slip the time forward and see what happens.  This is
what is nice about being retired.  Lotsa time. :-)

I have mine set to update daily and have no problem.
But surely the first step, if one is having a problem is to see what
happens when you simply do an update now.
As far as version 9, I get a pop up offering the paid version, but so
far it is updating to version 8.

A Google search will find articles on how to:

- Hide the startup banner window.
- Disable the spam adware window during an update.

Getting rid of the banner window is by adding a command-line parameter
to the Run key entry for Avira.  I don't use Avira but when I test it I
go find this parameter to get rid of the nuisance.  While one trick to
getting rid of the adware window is to rename avnotify.exe or delete or
move it, it could reappear under that filename after a program update.
I use the policy editor to add a software restriction policy that bans
avnotify.exe from running and, poof, no more spam windows showing up.

Hello to All:

At 1750Z, one of my Windows systems took almost 2 minutes to manually
download the virus definition files for my AntiVir Personal 9.

Their web server is also quite slow now possibly due to the publicity of
their latest release.

As another note regarding Avira, and because you are probably asking
about the free version, just remember that the free version of Avira
dumps several features from its paid version that are in the free
version of Avast.  Features missing in the free version of Avira are:

- Anti-malware protection.
- E-mail scanning (somewhat superfluous but some folks want it).
- Rootkit detection.
- Web guard.
- Anti-phishing protection (also not in free version of Avast).

Are you using version 8 or 9? Try updating after 11 pm eastern(US), the
servers are slower for the free users. You need to install a real-time
spyware scanner.
