Avira Antivir - better than Avast? + problems with ZA Pro

I just loaded Avira Antivir free and it's hard to tell whether it's better
than Avast.  I know some have said that it catches more in tests, but I see
that there's a conflict with Zone Alarm.  Avira's guard creates a service
that in turn creates a loopback to port 18350.  This causes the Zone Alarm
icon to always reflect internet activity.  Is there a fix for this?

Well, we live and learn. I've been running Alvira and ZA for a while and
only after reading your post did I noticed that of which you complain.
Since it never bothered me before and I can't see any cpu activity by
either app when idle and I like both apps I'm just going to ignore it
unless there is a fix which of course I will test. If it really bothers
you, Avast remains a very close 2nd to Avira. I could be happy with
either one.

I think it's a 'feature' !

There are plenty of threads about this behaviour in the AntiVir
support forums.

As far as I can make out, AntiVir  uses local TCP/IP
communications for its own purposes and the reason why your
firewall shows the connection is that it cannot distinguish
between local and internet traffic.

On my system if I click on 'stop' in ZA, then the little umbrella
closes up to show that on-access scanning is disabled.

Except that if you like to have Zone Alarm "stop all internet activity" by
activating its lock after a period of inactivity, it can't because it
thinks a program is always trying to contact the net through that loopback
port.  That's why I'm probably going to reload Avast (although it slows
down page rendering a bit with all its shields).

First of all, keygens can include all kinds of malware, registry strings,
or trojans in a normal situation.  How can you possibly take a chance with
them when loading the most important program on your hard drive other than
your firewall, namely your av program.  Check those programs in the link
you provided again and you'll see that all of them might be deemed
questionable.
