AVG With Sophos

Threaded View
I got a laptop with Norton Security installed as a free trial.
However, two things. Firstly, I am more of a fan of AVG than Norton
and secondly I had the option of free Sophos Antivirus from work.

So I removed Norton when the trial period ran out, installed Sophos
antivirus and switched on the Windows XP firewall (it was off,
presumably because Norton was installed from new).

But I am inclined to have something that covers spyware and so on, so
considering buying AVG security.

But if I do, does anyone have any experience of whether it's likely to
conflict with Sophos antivirus and/or the Windows XP firewall?

Thanks.

Hello:

You'd do much better with antispyware protection like MBAM/SAS.

Also keep an updated HOSTS file from:

Ah right.  I hadn't even heard of that; thanks.

Since when is MBAM better than one of the best anti virus programs at
catching viruses?

On top of that, why does MBAM constantly insist that Evidence
Eliminator is malware, even though I have the IGNORE menu full of all
instances of EE?

You might not have cared for their spamming in years past, but EE is
NOT malware.  The fact that MBAM insists on being "politically correct"
in disclaiming EE's worth is disconcerting. It means the author is
swayed by popular sentiment instead of reason. And if he is so
intent on such grim judgement in regard to EE, why does he employ such
a piece of shit like Slam! Bam! Raid! whose viruses have intentionally
destroyed god knows how many comps of innocent users over the decades?

I've used the paid-for version of MBAM for about two years and have yet
to find it worth much if used with one of the superior AVs such as
Kaspersky or Avira. Used with a lower rated AV, it 'might' be useful.

Maybe it's only a false display of compunction for all those creations
of yore that now has that group overreacting?
That's what the whole PC phenomenon is anyway isn't it
And who's to say any of them have actually changed their core
sociopathic values or supercilious attitude toward the less computer
savvy masses.

It's really amusing how each and every idiot who answered my post
misread or deliberately abused the truth of what I actually said in my
post.  My post was in reply to another who said MBAM would be a better
solution than an AV program.

As for my using MBAM, it is used for a purpose other than as an AV.

What a group of rabid fools with no lives.

That's not how I read it.

He said it would be better antispyware protection than that offered
bundled in a suite by AVG.

Re: AVG With Sophos

That's not what Pete asserted, actually, but OP's plan is kind of confusing.

The OP is talking about using AVG Security in conjunction with Sophos:

< But I am inclined to have something that covers spyware and so on, so
< considering buying AVG security.
<
< But if I do, does anyone have any experience of whether it's likely to
< conflict with Sophos antivirus and/or the Windows XP firewall?

Pete suggested MBAM in lieu of AVG Security (proposed for antispyware
protection), not instead of Sophos (in use for antivirus protection).

Does it feel good knowing I'm so far above you, that some of my work is
used everyday on your PC? *grin*. I'm so good, you had to bootleg it.

It's not better, and doesn't pretend to be. MBAM is not an AV program,
so it makes sense that it wouldn't be very good at that particular
task.

It sounds like you want to use MBAM as an AV solution. That's not
going to work very well.

MBAM doesn't even target viruses.

It's not. We've never implied it was.

Evidence Eliminator is a pile of junk, they've tried for years to go
straight; but still affliate with malware distributors. As such, we still
detect it.

We have explained this in length in our forums. I'm not going to repeat
the discussion here for your ranting.

Well, the facts of life are really simple. I'm employed by them for my
knowledge of malware. This "piece of shit" as you say writes some of the
definitions that keep a worthless theifing pile of shit like yourself,
safer. Your welcome.

Or in other words, I'm very good with software; much better than you will
ever live to be, and I get paid well for the knowledge. how's that work
for you, my little bitch? :)

AVG and Sophos would probably conflict, and Sophos is better IMO

If I were in your situation, I would opt for Sophos and the Windows XP
firewall.

Additional anti-[spy|ad|mal]ware usually won't hurt much. If you want to
play with a firewall, go ahead - but there is no need.

Thanks.  That was what I was originally thinking, but then got caught
up with AVG options.
