AVG Free -- where does command come from that says "Scan with AVG Free" in context menu?

Does anyone know?  I've looked through the entries in ContextEdit and
via the filetypes way but can't see where this command originates from
that appears in the context menu when we right-click on any filetype.
It isn't showing up in the usual spots.  thx

Do you mean how do you enable or disable it?If so its shell extension
component in AVG main face.If its enabled there and not showing in
explorer then it maybe worth trying  a "repair installation" that will
put back in the relevant registry settings. When you try to uninstall AVG
it should present you with the option of uninstalling or repairing
.Choose repair. It does this in the pro version so im assuming it will do
the same for the free.

No, but thanks for this info.  I know how to disable and enable the
shell extension via the option in the control center.  I need to know
where the entry is.

I ended up looking for and signing on to the AVG forum and the answer
is that it's a registry entry.  Unfortunately, I don't know how to
edit that type of registry entry to include and icon (the reason I
needed to know this).  I keep hitting the "AVG anti-spyware" context
entry all the time because it has an icon where the av one doesn't.

Still researching this.

Thanks.

Heres grisoft reply...

Please let us inform you, that right now this option is not available.
But we have already reported similar requirement from another users.

We have passed all necessary information to our development department
and it is possible that this feature will be available in one of the next
program version of AVG.

Thank you for your cooperation, it is highly appreciated.

Don't know where 'bassbag' was going in his reply.  I see no
user-configurable option within AVG anti-virus that lets the user
disable or remove the namespace for the context menu for "Scan with
AVG".  If you have AVG installed, you get that extension.

You could use NirSoft's Shell Extension Viewer (shexview.exe) to see
just where it is defined.  The name of the extension doesn't always
match the string that you get to see.  Sort by the "Company Name" column
to see Grisoft's additions.  For me, there are 2 of them: one extension
called "AVG7 Find Extension Class" and "AVG7 Shell Extension Class".  My
guess is that you want to look at the 2nd one.  Although this utility
has "Viewer" in its name, you can use it to disable extensions.

Although it doesn't let you change the string that gets displayed in the
context menu, you can get the classID for the extension and then search
in the registry using regedit.  On searching for
"9F97547E-4609-42C5-AE0C-81C61FFAEBC3", the classID identified in
Nirsoft's utility, I see the global shell extension was defined under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers.  More searching found
the folder context extension was defined under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers.  More searching
showed more object types with shellex entries for context handlers where
AVG was listed.  I didn't find where "Scan with AVG" was defined in the
registry as the handler's display string for AVG so you probably don't
get to change it (i.e., it comes out of the DLL file).

I did find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions under which AVG7 was listed under the Approved subkey.  I
suspect the Blocked subkey is where Shell Extension Viewer would move
the entry if you chose to disable the context extension.

According to softpedias screenshots of AVG 7.5 FREE the shell extension
module which is responsible for the context menu entry can be activated
/deactivated?
http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/AVG-Free-Edition-Screenshot -

.This has a simple activate/deactivate choice. As you mention though ,an
reinstallation or repair (im also assuming thats part of the free AVG
installer) should put the context scan back where it belongs.

I may be wrong here, but I think avgse.dll may be responsible for this
too. I had to use the shexview program to stop this in order to fully
remove AVG from my system

You are probably right as that .dll is related to shell extension too.On
my system if i deactivate the shell extension module, the context menu
disappears in explorer..if i activate it,its present again.I do not
however use the free version ,but the ISS version,so i am assuming that
activation/deactivation of the shell extension module in the free version
will behave exactly the same.If the avgse.dll is missing or corrupted
then a repair or reinstallation should also fix this.

There is, actually.  It's in the control center.

Hi, thanks.  Yes, I ended up finding and signing on to the AVG forum
and they also told me about this registry entry.  Thanks.  I don't now
how to edit this entry to add an icon.  The annoyance is that their
anti-spyware context menu entry has an icon whereas the av one does
not.  After a few months of quite frequently hitting the wrong entry,
I'm trying to find a way to add an icon to it.

The challenge is that the shell extension can be configured somewhat
in the settings for it in the control center, otherwise I'd just tick
to disable the shell extension from within AVG and then set my own via
a context menu editor, which I have.

Anyway, I'll figure it out eventually (I hope).  :)
