Is there any point in paying for AVG professional version over using AVG
Free.  I know the paid-for version has more flexible testing options,
for example, but is there any "killer" reason why the paid-for version
would be a better bet than the free version?

It might be the only real difference is the tech support. For instance,
the next time there's an outbreak and the servers they use to make
updates available are overwhelmed (no matter which of the available
lists you use) - those with the paid for version will be eligible for
the option of clogging the tech support lines up too. :))

I second the kudos for NOD32.

I don't know AVG but before NOD32, I tried Avast.  The free version
and the paid version appeared the same until I looked at every item
each covered: the free version did not cover script-blocking while
the paid version did.  I suspect there is some similar difference
with AVG.

AVG Free Edition receives updates via a lower priority service.
Priority updating via ultra reliable Akamai servers is only available
for purchased products.
AVG Free Edition does not offer advanced testing options, such as
automatic healing, password-protected archives reporting, adjustment of
scan process priority and many others.
AVG Free Edition has no technical support!

thanks - looks like there's not really a lot in the paid-for version
that I'd desperately need to have.
