Apparently this (which I've been cheerfully using these last 6 months)
is going away from Jan 2007. Anyone  like to recommend a suitable
replacement .. 'free' is about the right price. Just AV - firewall,
spam, and similar cr&p I can do some other way.

Re: AVG free edition.

Where did you get the information saying it will no longer be free?

Hi BB

Will 7.5 be an auto-update package, or do we have to d/l a new setup
file?

When upgrading the virus defs today (on an old PC which had been off for
a month) I got a popup saying I'd have to upgrade to 7.5. I went to the
7.5 page, (a manual job) and find no free edition there, only '30 days
free trial' versions. I'd be delighted if I am wrong and it is still
going to be around for free (although it doesn't seem to want to play
nicely with my Turnpike email program, but then nothing much does).

To answer the original question; if it does go away, Avast seems to be
quite nice, but you do have to do a free renew each year I think.
