AVG Free - daily update size and rebooting?

Is it my imagination or has daily AVG updates substantially increased
in size from just a couple of months ago?

And also, now it seems that _every_ update comes with a requirement to
reboot in order for the updates to take effect. A month or so okay I
can't recall ever having to reboot for AVG in this way. Am I doing
something wrong here, or does anti-virusing take increasing efforts
these days? Just curious.

AVG Free 7.1.394
WinXP Pro Sp2

I'm not having a problem with AVG Free 7.0.  All going smoothly.

Weird...something's definitely gone wrong with my installation.
Thanks for the replies. Guess I best uninstall it and get the latest
version and have another go.

Cheers
Thanks

That's the easiest way forward on the rare occasions AVG goes wonky
in my experience. Browse to free.grisoft.com to get the latest
version.

Yup, and gazing out the window a few moments ago I realized the
"problem" was my own fault, not AVG's...

Seems I like to keep the number of running background processes to a
bare minimum, and AVG has 3: avgupsvc, avgamsrv, plus optional avgemc
(if you want email scanning) plus the foreground invisible process
avgcc. All that seemed a bit excessive to my uneducated eye, so I
figured I might just handle updating manually, and so I set avgupsvr
(AVG Update Service process) to manual. Silly me, I forgot I'd done
it, and had assumed (never a good thing to do) that avgupsrv was
merely auto checking for updates and auto downloading (which I had
decided I could do for myself). Turns out, obviously, that that
background process needs to do a few more things regarding updating
than I'd figured. Which brings to mind an old adage about having just
enough knowledge to be dangerous to one's self, if not others. ;)

Ah yea, check also your update properties. Highlight "update", click
properties, and verify the radio button to "update immediately" is selected.
Etc etc.....................................................

Today's update for Avast! is about 21,000 bytes.   ;-)
They come often and are almost always between 2 and 25 KB.
There was a program update about a month ago...

I once ran into this problem. AVG was corrupt. I was forced to completely
uinstall AVG, then reboot, then download and install the latest version. All
was well.

If you're getting prompted to reboot each time, you've probably got the same
problem.
