AVG Free 9.0 - Shutting it Down Completely

The latest AVG, ever since I installed it, likes to take me from whatever
game I'm playing to the desktop.  It happened during both Age of
Mythology, and Age of Empires III.  It never happened before updating AVG.
I shut down what I could shut down with the Task Manager, and whatever
didn't immediately relaunch itself after I shut it down, and that solved
the problem.  What I need to know is how do you get AVG to utterly shut
down all aspects of itself?  That seems to be impossible.

Thanks,
Damaeus

Unistall it. Obviously. Why are you even bothering to use it again?

Then get something which suits you better.

Try searching this and related newsgroups for many many  suggestions and
comments, and then make up you own mind.

Cheers,

Roy

Reading from news:alt.comp.anti-virus,

That's one of the stupidest things to write.  I like AVG.  I just don't
want it running at certain times, at all.  And uninstalling it is a stupid
thing to do because I'd just have to reinstall it after playing whatever
game I'm playing.

Oh, I dunno... It's a virus scanner.  I used to not bother using them
since I didn't open mysterious files I received in e-mail, but since
certain things can be stuffed into web pages, I decided some time ago to
start running an anti-virus program.

Someone should break your newsreader.

It's always such a pleasure to read such a cultured and well reasoned
response, so rare here.

Do have a nice day, it sounds as though you need one badly.

Pip! Pip! old bean.

Like I hadn't thought of doing that before he suggested it.  People assume
if one asks a question, they must not have tried to search the web or the
newsgroups for an answer.  And sometimes getting 500,000 results in the
search query reveals 95% commercial pages, 5% decent information.
Sometimes it just doesn't float to the surface all that easily.  Sometimes
the links are dead.  Sometimes the you go to the page in the search
results, and the information you were searching for isn't even there.

And when you post that question on a usenet forum,
sometimes you get a less than satisfactory response.

They only  way to handle these spoiled brats on Usenet - such as those
who sit around waiting for someone to jump all over, is to SILENTLY
kill file them, thus, totally ignoring them.  Since you cannot reach
out for their throats via Usenet, this is the only way to handle them.

How else would you be rid of "all aspects" of it?

Maybe you could ask at their forum. As I recall, their was a way to use
it as an "on-demand" only scanner in the past, but I doubt the newer
versions work that way - what with antimalware, antispyware, automatic
updating, e-mail proxy, and other fluff all added.

It probably happens during automatic updates. If that is the case, turn that
function off.
Try the free Avira. It is simple to turn it on and off by just rt clicking
on the taskbar icon and unchecking the enable choice.
