AVG Bloatware

Have watched my AVG free eating more and more disc space over the last
year.

Today I updated AVG Free to V11 after numerous nags.  Despite the fact
that I installed it to my 'E' drive (where all my apps live), it
increased my 'C' drive from 2.1 Gig to 2.45 Gig.  That's 350 Meg of
stuff, most of which I really felt should have gone into the
application folder on the 'E' drive.

Cleaned out all the install and backup rubbish and got the 'C' drive
back to 2.25 Gig.  Still 150 Meg of something more than a reasonable
'update' there.

At this point I gave in, uninstalled it and put the latest Avast on.
My 'C' drive is now exactly 2.0 Gig. That's 100 Meg less than the old
AVG.

I've generally found AVG OK over the last few years, but enough is
enough. Bye bye AVG.

No - I'd already cleared those folders.  This bloat was all under
'Documents and Settings'. AVG 11 seemed to have taken a page from
Microsoft's books and introduced yet another huge folder of numerous
files all with very similar names like MS's 'CollectedData_1234.xml'.
It clearly works very differently from the pervious version.

Re: AVG Bloatware

I agree it is irritating. It appears to be storing lots of the set up
data in case you want to do a repair install. I just deleted it and it
hasn't caused any problems with the day to day running.

Hi gufus.  I spent a long time comparing Avast and Avira and came to
no firm conclusion.  As with all well-known AV progs there's a handful
of people out there who decry either of the above as well as AVG.

I tried both of them at the last AVG update and found they both had
their stong points.  Unfortunately at that stage I was comfortable
with AVG so stayed with it.  Now it's dumped for ever I may try Avira
again in the near future.  I've a multi-boot PC, so can afford to
experiment.
