AVG Antivirus on Vista Home 64 bit (CTF file?)

Do you have a question? Post it now! No Registration Necessary.  Now with pictures!

Threaded View
using AVG anti virus version 8.0.173 I get an error saying invalid
update control CTF file.  I searched and found an article saying I
should delete the CTF file under AVG's settings folder.  I searched my
entire hard drive and there are no CTF files anywhere.

Have you enabled viewing of hidden files.

Yes.

If CTF files become corrupted, the corresponding AVG program may not be
updated; this problem can be fixed by running AVG's
"deleteupdatefiles.exe" utility or by manually removing the CTF files
and downloading the updates again; these files are typically named
"avginfoavi.ctf" and "avginfowin.ctf" and are saved in the
"\ProgramData\avg8\update\download" folder.

Ugh...
I can get to AVG's website but it tells me it can't connect to the
server.  I can run it on my other machine.

It happens that Justin formulated :

Have you removed those 2 files? If you have, uninstall AVG & reinstall.

Yes, I did.
I updated just now, ever so slowly but it updated.  I waited five
minutes and tried it again, this time the connection failed.

I don't understand, on my XP machine everything is fine.

Re: AVG Antivirus on Vista Home 64 bit (CTF file?)

Justin expressed precisely :

That being the case, I feel your AVG install is still corrupt,
uninstall & start afresh.

OK, now I have stability issues and AVG just started a scan on its own.
  I can't stop it.

Whats another decent free anti virus program that runs on Vista 64 bit?

What difference would that make?  I uninstalled it, and deleted the AVG
folder which included the magical ctf files.
Then I rebooted.
I reinstalled, tried to update and got the same ctf file bullshit I had
before.
How would uninstalling/reinstalling help me out?

Comodo Internet Security contains Comodo  Antivirus and Comodo
Firewall. The Antivirus can be installed separately without the
firewall, and is Vista 64 bit compatible. I use it and it's working
fine so far.
