I tried the free version several months ago and IMO the scans were
slow and the updates were very large. I was only using it as an
on-demand scanner. I switched to MBAM.

Look at the 'Free for home use' version.

I have set up Avast! on the Windows computers of many friends. The daily
updates are quite small. Caesar, you must be thinking of something else.

Avast! is an anti-virus program. MalwareBytes (MBAM) is an
anti-spyware/trojan program. You should use both.

That may well be. I don't trust my memory as much these past few
years.

Thanks for the comments.

I recently removed the free version 8 and installed Avira. Version 7 of
Avast seemed to run quite well, but version 8 slows down the loading of
files. This is particularly noticeable when opening a windows explorer
pane with a number of large files.
Avira is generally regarded as a better solution among the freebies.

Hello Pritesh:

If you are referring to Avast Home Edition 4.8, yes, It enjoys some
popularity in these newsgroups.  You may use it for 60 days without
registering.  After which you are asked to register for one year's use.

Some users do not like the GUI but most usually have good praise for
this product.

A one year professional addition is available for INR 2,647.71, or up to
three years for INR 4,880.03

First thing to do is to disable that terrible skin.
Without the skin the interface is much much better.

Never heard of it, it could be trying to glom onto the good reputation
of Avast! antivirus - so I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

...or you made a typo.

Re: Avasth reviews

^^^ oh tht was a typo.. i meant avast..
thanks for ur help guys..
i think i'll
try avast for a month and then Avira like suggested by a
fellow member..

I thought so, but it was there twice (subject line and message body) so
I thought i'd better play it safe and address the possibility that some
rogue was leveraging a name similarity.

IIRC there was one doing this with Spybot Search & Destroy some time
back.
