Avast vs Sophos on Mac

Despite being on a Mac, latest updates of everything, I run antiviral scans
once a month or so.  ClamXav is my mainstay, and I also have Sophos.  I was
also offered Avast, again the free version.

When I tried to install it, it announced that I would first have to uninstall
Sophos.

Is Avast that much better, so worth it?

The best advice is that if you don't have Microsoft Windows on your
machine, you should have *NO* resident anti-virus software on your Mac!

For more advice, ask here: https://discussions.apple.com/welcome

That is *NOT* good advice. Your mac is just as capable of passing
something that won't bother it to a machine that would. While you don't
need resident AV in some cases, you should still be scanning files
before you send them along to your friends and associates.

Although the files are 'safe' on your mac, they may not be so friendly
on a windows machine.

There a fellow posting here - using Microsoft Windows as his operating
system - and who has NO anti-virus software on his computer(s). Now how
stupid is that?!!! ;-)

I have no antivirus on any of these machines. Nothing resident
anyway. No real need to waste the resources.

What's stupid is that you have no idea how it can be done and still
be reasonably safe. And no, it doesn't take any 'hacker' skill.

There is little about this subject which I've not read, FTR!

If you've time to spare, YOU ask on the Apple forums and see what advice
YOU are given!

Apple themselves have incorporated an AV internally in the OS X Yosemite
operating system! (called X-protect IIRC)

Doesn't that contradict the best advice you previously wrote?

Not intentionally. :-(

Perhaps I should have said " ... you should have *NO* resident THIRD
PARTY anti-virus software on your Mac!"

Were you previously aware of X-protect, Dustin? Here's an item FYI

You never do anything bad intentionally. *laugh*

Yes, I was being sarcastic.

I could give two shits about Apple, or their products. I was simply
commenting on your bad advice. :)

Re: Avast vs Sophos on Mac

Interesting reading about being built-in to Yosemite, but I don't find
any of the file or process names that are given, and nothing obvious in
System Preferences.  Where should I be looking for the Apple supplied
stuff?

I know. You do that a lot. Maybe that is why you have lost your credibility.

I don't give bad advice, Dustin.

That's all down to you. You simply cannot be trusted. :-(
