I have tried both and also Avira. I think Avira is best.

I prefer Avast; boot-time scan, frequent updates of data base and program.
I've tried both AVG and Avira.

Is there a problem with having both installed?

If you try to run both at the same time, they could conflict. YMMV

The avast seems to update itself--I could not get Avg to do that--on my
laptop it does... but on my desktop it does not--I think I installed it
wrong--I cannot reinstall it  so avast is here..seems good-has a few
features avg does not--like checking all emails coming in..memory check
everyday...auto updates... so far so good
