Avast blocking problem

Hi Experts,

A few weeks ago I set up the Avast 4.8 home
edition prog. and it's been a pain in the butt
since. I have been using this Avast for many years
and it was always self-adjusting. I never had to
make any settings.

Now it seems to want to block most of the traffic
and I have to keep shutting it down.
Could this be due to some flaw in the setup? I am
using Win2k with a DSL line.

TIA

I read that starting with Avast 4.5 it includes a Network Shield (firewall)
for the first time. Prior to version 4.5 it had no firewall. Not having a
firewall is one of the things I've always liked about Avast over other free
(for home use) products. I prefer just using the built-in Windows firewall.
And it's one of the reasons I recommend it to my home user clients and
usually preinstall it on  home bound systems prior to delivery.

Having said that... I've not used versions with the firewall. Can you turn
it off? That should essentially put you back to where you were before it was
included. Or... possibly just take the time to configure it differently?

I am using Avast 4.8 and I am not aware of it having any in built firewall
as such .

Re: Avast blocking problem

"A new resident protection module was added to avast! 4.5: the Network
Shield. This module provides protection against known Internet
worms/attacks. It analyses all network traffic and scans it for malicious
contents. It can be viewed as a lightweight firewall (or more precisely, an
IDS (Intrusion Detection System))."

I certainly am the furthest thing from being an expert but this I'll tell
you....I just removed AVAST 4.8 from my
electronic abode. What a memory hogging pain in the ass it was.

Thanks guys for the information. I already have a
firewall, so I'll try to turn off Avast's
one. I just looked in my Task Manager and see no
trace of Avast (which is running) in the list of
running processes- at least no prog that begins
with av. Do they have another name for the running
program?

You might want to give this freebie a whirl to see if your 'running
process' is listed, it can also whack it for you.
